    Description

    Hello,

My name is Jimena, I live close to Palomino and I'm currently in the process of opening my own dog and animal sanctuary in the beautiful rural town called Rio Ancho, in the department of La Guajira which is about 15min away from famous Palomino and its stunning beaches. I've started this project from zero and I'm finally at the point where I can receive some help from dog-loving volunteers! Right now there are 12 dogs rescued who stay at the sanctuary so there's lots of loving work with the dogs and of course around the whole project. The sanctuary is about 20 minutes walking distance from Rio Ancho town in a quiet place in nature.

In return, you can enjoy a taste of the exotic, majestic jungle life of Colombia:
Wake up with the company of these beautiful souls (rescued dogs) the sound of exotic birds like tucanes, guacamayas, or wild howler-monkeys and the peaceful sound of water in the property's stream.
Take a step back from your everyday city's modern stress and nurture your mind and soul with the magic and silence this sanctuary has to offer.

You can learn a lot about taking care of dogs, the medicinal use of plants for well-being, and farm life in general like planting for example yuka, ñame, banano, mais, sugar cane, and all the citrus fruits you can imagine. Prepare yourself not only to make a lemonade but a "smoothie" made of tropical fruits.

On another hand you will also learn about carpentry, cement work and bio-construction in general. Our goal is to ecologically work with the materials this place has to offer.

Every day something new is going on, so prepare to get your hands dirty!

In general, every day is different and the tasks always change a little bit so there's no boring routine. Sometimes you will be alone, sometimes you will be with the worker from the sanctuary or together with me helping.
    Your day will consist of:

    Farm tasks:
Cut branches, clean trees, fertilize trees, clean with a machete, water plants, transplant plants, harvest fruits, etc.

    Dog tasks:
Play with the dogs, give them tons of love and cuddles, if needed give them medicine, clean they're ears, feed them, bathe them in the river, brush them, rub them with coconut oil, and once again tons of love and cuddles.

    Other things:
Clean the main house like sweeping around, washing sheets, and general maintenance of the place

    Construction:
Bio construction with red earth, cut wood, sand wood, paint/varnish wood, make structures and or furniture, cement tasks, fix fences, make paths around the property , art and creative tasks at the house is always more than welcome.

    Hébergement

You will sleep in beds or hammocks in the big shared House, you can bring your own or use the ones we provide you with blankets and mosquito nets.

    Food/Kitchen:
Unfortunately, I can't offer you food, but I am more than happy to share all the food from the farm that we harvest. To get food you can go and walk to Rio Ancho or get a mototaxi to get fresh food like fruits and veggies for a good price or go and enjoy a meal in a rural restaurant or you can go to Palomino which is a 20min mototaxi drive where you can find tons of hotels and restaurants on the beach and around.

    What else:

The sanctuary is located around 20min walking distance (5min with mototaxi) away from the village Rio Ancho. Rio Ancho is one of the most beautiful rivers that springs from the majestic Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.
As you will find out the region is home to many indigenous tribes such as Kogui, Arhuacos and Wayuu. You may visit and learn about their culture. The closest indigenous village is around 30 minutes away with mototaxi or a beautiful 2 hours hike next to the river Rio Ancho. "They're really famous for their mochilas, hammocks and other handcrafts"
This whole area has many rivers and waterfalls to explore in general.

Then there's the beaches, the closest one is Playa las gaviotas, about 15min with a mototaxi or Palomino around 20 minutes.

    Signal/Internet:
There is internet and semi semi-good signal 80% of the time, you'll need to bring a sim card from the operator Claro to get some connection up here.

    Electricity:
There is no electricity here but you will have solar lights around in the main house. Some days we start the generator to work with powertools and you can charge whatever you need. I highly recommend you to bring a power bank or small solar panel with you to independently charge your things.

    Other:
To keep in mind, you will jump out of your comfort zone. Let me remind you sanctuary is located in the middle of a tropical jungle therefore: there are mosquitos, ticks, snakes, scorpions, bats, etc
    Rules:
You may bring mosquito repellent and you might kill ticks. That said these are the only animals you are allowed to kill now that you must understand we not only value life but respect the ecosystem balance.
Any trash you generate you must bring down to the village, no trash or litter in the house or around the property and nature.
Smoking is only allowed in a section of the house. This you MUST be responsible with because all the materials used to construct the house are highly flammable.
Therefore no candles are allowed because of the high risk of fire.
