Hi! I’m Freek. A year ago I decided to leave the Netherlands behind to travel through Portugal with my very own campervan. After doing some volunteering/workaway projects myself I came across a beautiful property with 3 hectares of land in the Algarve and decided to make this old farm a base for campervan travelers.
In July I started in restoring the old farmhouse to its former glory with the help of workawayers / friends. Together with local experts we are turning the farmhouse and its land into a paradise for travelers that are seeking for an organic & authentic experience while staying closely connected to nature. We live together in and around the house with about 3 workawayers / friends, depending on the amount of work that needs to be done.
Bricolage et projets de construction
Cuisine/repas pour la famille
• Fresh food and accommodation
• Knowledge of English/Dutch (other languages)
• Knowledge and experience on building etc.
• Shed full of proper tools
• Lots of jobs to improve your skillset
• Different cultures and a community feeling
• Guidance and good company
• An unique experience, a chance to work together on a beautiful project surrounded by nature
I like to share my knowledge and experience gained from previous building projects with people who are eager to learn new things. Therefore I feel it is necessary to have access to professional equipment and tools. As mentioned before the bigger construction projects are supervised by local experts who will also share their expertise. Because the renovation project is still very much in construction phase, it’s useful to already have basic knowledge on building and carpentry, but we are also learning together as we go.
At our location you are learning every day. Whether it is about surfing, yoga, (the Portuguese) culture, languages, or the actual work itself, together we can do and learn anything. These are the perks of living together as a group. But the domain is big enough to take your distance at times and enjoy the nature
As we are renovating the farm house, we try to do the construction work ourselves as much as possible. Our main focus now is creating a nice and comfortable living space in the house, but there are many other nice construction ideas planned for the future.
If you are considering to join our project, possible activities in which you will participate will be:
• Construction/renovation of the house (Building a new roof, electricity, plumbing, moving / taking down walls & designing furniture)
• Maintaining the land. (irrigation system, plumbing, development of infrastructure)
• Some small household chores such as cooking & shopping

We are located somewhat off grid, only a small 15 minute drive from the beach. Because the house is under construction, accommodation is temporarily limited. I’m still based in my campervan, but there is a bedroom available for 2 workawayers. You will have everything you need at your disposal but don’t expect too much luxury yet. Our terrain is equipped with electricity, a laundromat, fully equipped kitchen, WIFI and a compost toilet. Hot running water is also an ongoing project, but with the Portuguese climate we are still enjoying the refreshing showers 😉 You are of course very welcome to bring your own campervan!
Plenty of fresh food with local origins will be provided during your stay. We prepare three meals per day, mainly veggie, and try to include a great deal of local products. Frequently a lady who sells greens comes by to drop of some fresh fruits and vegetables. Whoever feels like cooking can prepare the meal. We always try to eat together, as it is experienced as a very valuable moment to connect and have fun.
A weekday, from the perspective of a workawayer:
You rise around 8 to enjoy some breakfast under the Portuguese sun surrounded by fruit trees. Enjoy some coffee and fresh pressed orange juice from the land. As you feast on some homemade oatmeal, yoghurt and fresh fruits, Freek will scare the sleep right out of you with his morning enthusiasm and some music.
Right after you enjoyed some quality time on the compost throne, Carlos the local roof constructor arrives with his dog Nina and greets you in Portuguese. If you don’t fala português yet, no worries! Carlos will use hands and feet to make sure you learn what he means fast enough.
In the morning you will either work on the ongoing project (such as building the foundation of the roof) or you will take on an individual project were it is expected of you to work independently. These projects are for example creating infrastructure using the tractor or building furniture. Of course you need a solid set of tools to do so. The shed is stacked with a new set of DeWalt tools, paradise for every builder.
12:00 ‘o clock, we all know what that means, lunchtime! While one of the other volunteers is baking some fresh sourdough bread, Freek is preparing his specialty; Tortillas. Since this usually takes a while to prepare, you sit back and relax. You can go for a walk around the perimeter or lay back in the sun and siesta. Once lunch is on the table, everyone joins in. Once the stomachs are filled, the cooks can relax and the others will do the dishes. After that, let’s see what still needs to be done.
Let’s go on with some building. But oh no! You are out of material. No worries, the construction store is just a 10 minutes drive away. You exchange the tractor for an airconditioned van and get everything you need. Now nothing is holding you back from being unstoppable.
After all the sweat and dirt, nothing is better than a cold shower (not that you really have any other choice). Then it is time to destroy everyone in a game of (for instance) exploding kittens. To make amends after an intense game you can decide to prepare dinner. The food is gone before you know it. Time to clean up! Well not you of course, because you already did your part on serving the food. After hanging out for a while, you decide it is time to snuggle up in your bed. Safely under your mosquito-net you fall asleep. Dreaming of the adventures of past and present.
In the weekends you are free to do whatever it is your heart desires. There are two surfboards standing around that you are welcome to utilize. Sometimes we go out together and go for a nice swim or discover the area, everyone is welcome to join but nothing is compulsory. These are nice times to enjoy all the beauty the Algarve has to offer.
