    Description

We are an NGO located in the Arusha region of Tanzania. We strive to increase environmental conservation through birding and afforestation education. We offer educational classes in English, birding and natural history for students and club members as they seek employment in the tour guide industry.

In addition, we understand the challenges of deforestation across our continent, and are committed to educating students in local schools about the vital role trees play in the environment. Through occasional school visits and tree planting programs, Tanzanian youth are learning the value healthy forests play in their future.

We also offer women computer training in our classrooms in the Leganga suburb of Arusha, providing skills that will help them succeed in their future employment.

We welcome volunteers who would like a more in-depth experience of life in Tanzania. Native speakers can add a lot to our English classes, and volunteers are encouraged to contribute their special skills in areas such as photography, computer and social media, videography and natural history education.

During your stay you will be able to learn many things about our local culture such as Swahili language, traditional foods, and the natural environment. And you will get an opportunity to learn about African birds and animals.

While here you may choose to visit our attractions like national parks, forest reserves, museums, and waterfalls. Our house is located only a 20 minute drive from Arusha National Park and an hour and a half drive from Moshi town at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa at 5,895 meters.

Volunteers with diverse skills are invited to work with us especially those who have passion to conserve the environment and community well-being.

During the school year we can use help in a variety of areas. Past volunteers have assisted with English, foreign language instruction, photography, natural history and birding ……… Tell us your passion and we will find a way for you to help us.

Our classes take place Monday-Friday during the school year (mid-January to mid-December). English is typically taught four hours in the morning, and nature guide classes for three to four hours in the afternoon. Weekends are free, though there are often group birding walks in the surrounding area and occasional activities such as tree planting and community clean up. Your schedule will depend on the skills you bring to share with us.
During your stay you will have a chance to go on birding outings around the area, improve your Swahili language skills, if interested, and receive recommendations on nearby attractions – waterfall hikes, safaris and cultural visits.

You will stay in a simple African house with a secure fenced yard in Leganga village about one half hour by public transport from Arusha town. Our volunteer rooms with bunk beds are adjacent to a bathroom with western style toilet. We provide mosquito nets. Traditional Tanzanian-style food is provided three times a day (rice, ugali, beans, vegetables, fruit eggs from our chickens, as well as occasional meat from our chickens, ducks and rabbits). Meals are prepared by our local chef, but you will also be able to cook for yourself if you wish. You will share the house with up to two volunteers and our staff, and many of our students and bird club members come by for meals so there is a true family atmosphere and cultural exchange.

School is not in session from mid-December to mid-January as well as during breaks in April and June. The need for volunteers in minimal at these times, so please check the calendar when making your inquiry.
During your time off you can:
    - Go for long or short walks to enjoy nature, where you can see waterfalls, a crater lake, many different bird species and even the Colobus and Sykes’ monkeys.
    - Visit some of the near-by national parks, like Arusha National Park, Tarangire and Ngorongoro Crater. If desired, we can help you with arranging a safari to meet your budget.
    - Try local restaurants and cuisine. Shop in local village markets.
    - Experience local transport like dala-dala (minibus) and boda-boda (motorcycle taxi).
We are a bare-bones organization and we can always benefit from donations. In the past volunteers have contributed new and used binoculars, bird and nature field guides, laser pointers, classroom supplies, a classroom projector and even a bicycle. If you have the desire to contribute, please inquire as to what our needs may be at the time you are volunteering.
