    Description

We are a warm, grounded family living on 25 acres of peaceful countryside, just a 10-minute drive from town. Our land is a living, breathing space — home to gardens and a greenhouse, chickens, two gentle Bernese Mountain dogs, and a cat — all cared for with love and intention.

I have three adult daughters (ages 20–26), two of whom live away from home. My partner travels frequently for work, and I work close to the property with an off-grid wellness retreat. Because of this, having an extra set of loving, capable hands to support the home, gardens, and animals is deeply appreciated.

Life here is calm, nature-based, and often self-directed. I enjoy helping Workawayers explore the area and intentionally setting aside dedicated days to share local places and experiences. At the same time, the growing season — especially for the gardens and greenhouse — is an important priority, and we’re looking for someone who feels genuinely invested in supporting that rhythm of the land.

We value kindness, respect for personal space, and the ability to take initiative when needed. While we live in the country, we are well connected — a nearby town and an artist village with cafés and local shops are close by, and a bike can be provided for those who enjoy exploring independently.

We love welcoming people who feel called to rural living, enjoy being hands-on, and appreciate contributing to a home and land that are nurtured with care.

We welcome people who want to experience a true Canadian family lifestyle. Life here is hands-on, nature-based, and collaborative — we all work together to create a happy, grounded home. Travellers will have the chance to refine their English skills, learn classic Canadian dishes, explore our nation’s capital, Ottawa, or simply spend an evening by the fire sharing stories and laughter.

We are also eager to learn about your culture — your language, traditions, and homemade dishes. This exchange is as much about you sharing as it is about experiencing life here with us.

Our area has plenty to explore: a great café up the road with live music on weekends, a nearby beach, and Ottawa just 30 minutes away by car, offering museums, markets, and countless cultural experiences.

Some days you may spend much of your time independently, as I am busy with work and managing the property, while other days we may spend the entire day together gardening, cooking, exploring, or enjoying activities as a family. We hope to host someone who enjoys being flexible, engaged, and ready to contribute while also respecting personal rhythms.

Whether helping around the house, gardening, cooking, or simply sharing quiet time, we look forward to creating memories and friendships that last a lifetime.

We are looking for someone who enjoys hands-on tasks — digging in the gardens, helping with small construction or projects around the house and property, and contributing to daily household tasks. This includes light indoor chores such as cooking, dishes, laundry, floors, general housekeeping, organizing spaces inside and out, and occasional painting or room refreshes.

As spring approaches, tasks will focus on preparing the gardens and greenhouse for the growing season, planting, and helping the land awaken after winter. During other seasons, work will shift to seasonal garden care, preparing the grounds for fall and winter, and indoor projects that keep the home and property maintained and beautiful.

Mother Earth is very important to us, and we strive to leave a gentle footprint. Composting, creating bird and butterfly gardens, supporting natural habitats for wildlife, and appreciating the abundance of our land are all part of life here.

We also look forward to sharing the beauty of this area with our Workawayers — exploring nearby trails, the town, and the artist village with its cafés and shops — while maintaining a rhythm of helping and care on the property. This is a hands-on experience for someone who is engaged, independent, and happy to contribute to a home and land nurtured with intention.

In exchange for your help around the house and gardens, we provide a private space for you to stay. Depending on the time of year, this may be a trailer with its own kitchen, bathroom, living room, and bedroom during the warmer months, or a bedroom in our house during other times. Either way, we understand how important personal space is, and we respect and honor that wholeheartedly.

We also provide meals, and I do my best to accommodate different dietary needs. We can discuss your requirements ahead of time to ensure we can meet them comfortably.

    Free Time & Exploration

We are located just west of Ottawa, in a beautiful rural area close to cottage country. There is plenty to explore and enjoy, depending on the season. In the spring, summer, and fall, the outdoors is perfect for hiking, biking (a bike can be provided for independent exploration), kayaking on local rivers and lakes, exploring trails, or simply enjoying the gardens and natural spaces nearby. In the winter, there are trails for snowshoeing, as well as opportunities for skidooing or four-wheeling.

Local cafés, restaurants, and markets are just a short drive away, and one café nearby hosts intimate live music from talented local and regional artists, making for a lovely evening out. There are also opportunities to experience yoga and other healing modalities nearby. Ottawa, the nation’s capital, is only 30 minutes away, offering museums, cultural experiences, and vibrant city life.

If there is something in particular you’d like to do or accomplish while you are here — whether it’s learning a new skill, exploring the area, or working on a personal project — just let me know. I am happy to help you make the most of your time here.
