It is a bit more distanced from Yosemite than we expected, but we still enjoyed it so much! And the nature and surroundings, of the house too! sunrises, sunsets, stargazing, what else do you need?
Working is really flexible 25hrs a week, it was nice to have nice regime, and we were building stone walls for a pool area so it was a huge challenge, we loved it!
Dan is very disciplined, very talented and hardworking, it was a pleasure for us to be a part of his landscaping mastery there!:) Every good work is about great communication, and we loved the conversations about everything while working together.
Penny is charming, young spirit, responsible woman that make us felt together with Dan like at home, like at a holidays. We also had a beautiful company with very friendly dogs and cats,...and squirels and birds!
Trailer we occupied was a dream came true experience, it took us only 2 days to feel like home there, so we decided to help and spend there even more days.
Dan and Penny provided us much more than we expected and we also went out with her son and girlfriend for a very nice concert in a locals' place full of lovely people!
We don't have to talk about Yosemite, just go there, get lost inbetween majestic trees and spend some beautiful days and night up there!:)

He was a very hard and steady worker, even in some extreme heat that we were experiencing during his time here. Penny and Dan are the sweetest host ever. I stayed with them for a time some years back during a roadtrip and instantly fell in love with them and their property. Being in such a beautiful part of California with such beautiful people is what Workaway is about.

Penny and Dan are generous, communicative, down to Earth and have a good sense of humor. I learned a good deal working at their place and the accomodations were lovely. Their spot is gorgeous. WOW! Pierina was a fantastic addition to our family and I feel like we gained a daughter. Pierina's primary job upon arrival was to ensure that my husband, Dan, was safe after his brain surgery. When she arrived he needed quite a bit of assistance with meals and medications. However, within the first two weeks, he became much more self sufficient
… read more and she was able to move outside a bit more to beautify the grounds on our property. Pierina was a true God-send and was able to give me great peace of mind when I returned to work. She was always around, checking in on Dan while she cleaned the house and prepared some terrific vegan meals for us to eat. Penny and Dan were just wonderful to me. I felt part of the family. I really enjoyed living with them and supporting them for a month. They are kind and grateful people who enjoy sharing with volunteers from other cultures. They were friendly with my basic level of English, that was not an impediment to converse and share spaces together.

And on my free weekends they took me to town to take buses to Yosemite Park or nearby cities. Looking to make it easier for me to know the surroundings. Mariposa is a paradise... It's spectacular!
As for the work, it was pleasant and without pressure, Penny is active and always does things around the house after work, so she only needed support with some chores.

… read more very varied, one day weeding around, the other building a fence or cutting wood. It can be hard and dirty, but it's as outside work should be. He also has the experience to lead/teach us when needed and he can do all the heavy work with his backhoe expertise.

Justin and Jen were fantastic workers. They helped with landscaping, painting and Justin built a beautiful barn-door-style sliding door for our bathroom. They worked very well together and didn't stop until finished. They were very pleasant and enjoyable to be around. They are welcome back anytime!

We had a comfortable trailer with a big bed and all the facilities.
They have a pool, it's perfect when the work is done! We really enjoyed it!
It's really hot during the day but we could organize ourselves how we wanted. They have a lot of different works to do. We cooked sometimes for them and they were always happy and thankful. We washed rocks, gardening, remove weeds, cut woods,... and we built and paint a big woodshade.

So, I stayed with Penny and Dan for about a month this past summer and I had an amazing experience!
I cannot overstate how beautiful their place is, central California is incredibly beautiful and their mountain top home is pristine.
The work:
I did a lot of landscaping jobs during my stay here, which was very fun and you always had Dan to assist
… read more and give you instructions for what he wanted - I stacked a rock wall and dug up some pathways/natural stairs and helped to even out some slopes. Furthermore I did a fair amount of weedwhacking on the slopes surrounding their property and also some work with a chainsaw, sawing up dead trees.
All in all I think the work was very fun and varied, I especially enjoyed the landscaping projects because it's very rewarding seeing your physical effort take shape. I averaged about 5h a day, with some days being more and some days being less, but it always evened out in the end. Dan was very flexible of when you did your working hours, unless you had some project that needed both of you.
The accomodation:
Wow, just wow. You'll not miss anything! I stayed in their glamping trailer which was very luxurious and comfy - and it had the most amazing views, especially of the sunrise. It's fully equipped with toilet, shower and kitchen stuff, so that's good. The bed was amazing, a queen size (?) memory-foam mattress and a view out over the central California mountains. Food-wise, it was crazy good! Penny cooks the m o s t delicious and healthy meals I've tried - and they're vegan! She keeps your fridge stocked, so you'll never go hungry or dissatisfied.
Yosemite National Park is about 1hr away, which is great and usually it's possible for Penny & Dan to get you a pass from an Airbnb-guest that doesn't need it. I recommend you having a car if you come here, so you can explore the surroundings - the small town of Mariposa is a ~7 min drive from their place and it has all you need - stores, restaurants, bars/pubs and the friendliest people! I enjoyed a couple open air-concerts while there and went to a bar called the Hideout, which was a cool place with live music.
If you like to stargaze, they have this amazing hammock in a small chillout-area just right next to their house, where you can lay all night, listening to the crickets & gazing the stars.
Oh - they also have the cutest and friendliest animals around! Say hi to Mack from me. :-)

Daniel seem to enjoy hanging out in our 'park' relaxing in the hammock during sunset and serenaded those around with his guitar. Donner diligently worked around our nine acre property weed-eating during an incredibly hot time of year to assist with fire abatement. Together Sara and Donner built a rock wall, pulled weeds, laid ground cloth and shoveled rocks in our 'park area' for all to enjoy. Penny and Dan were our first workaway hosts and we could not have had a better experience! We stayed with them for just under 2 weeks. They have a beautiful hilltop home and property; the pictures on their page really don't do the sunsets justice!
Under Dan's guidance, we worked all around the property throughout our stay. We both worked about 5
… read more hours every day, sometimes more or less depending on what needed to be done and the weather. I spent the first two days inside their house, deep cleaning their kitchen. Afterwards, I pulled weeds around their house. Donner spent the first week weed whacking around the property (mostly slopes) to help Dan cut a firebreak. Later, Donner and I worked on a few landscaping projects together, like stacking a rock wall and laying out matting and gravel for outside pathways. Except for the cleaning I did at the beginning, all of our work was outside in the sun and heat (it was 90-100F most days). Dan was happy to let us work whatever schedule we wanted, so on the really hot days we were able to get the bulk of our work done in the cooler morning and finish off later in the evening. It was hard work! But we both found it very rewarding.
The accommodations were very comfortable - the trailer has a queen tempurpedic mattress and a very efficient (and necessary) air-conditioning unit. The kitchen had everything we needed. We brought some of our own food when we came, but Penny also provided us with delicious vegan meals every day.
Penny and Dan are located about 1hr 15min from Yosemite National Park, and so on our days off we were able to visit Yosemite twice, which was really fantastic! Their Airbnb units are often rented out by tourists also visiting Yosemite, to give you an idea of how conveniently close they are to the park. We spent much of the rest of our free time comfortably in our trailer, but we also visited the nearby town, Oakhurst, a few times.
