We are a family of four living in an ex-guesthouse (closed due to Covid-19) on the beautiful wild West Coast of New Zealand. We are located an hour south of Hokitika, and 30 minutes north of Franz Josef Glacier. If you love nature, hiking, fishing, hunting, exploring.. you’ll love it here!
Even though the business is closed, we still love to host the occasional helper or two. We really enjoy the company, making new friends, sharing stories and knowledge - as well as being super grateful for some help!
It’s a large property and hard to keep up with the maintenance on our own. I (Angela) am also recovering from a surgery that has changed my abilities and mobility but I’m getting stronger every day.
The help is pretty straightforward like cleaning, organising, gardening, painting, stacking firewood, but if there is something in particular you'd like to learn while you’re here (anything from practical/outdoor skills to kitchen and crafting), please ask and we'll see what we can come up with to fit you!
The children are aged 11 and 12 and will respect your space but are also great fun. There is also an elderly but very cuddly Manx cat named Artemis and a cockatiel who acts friendly but it’s a trap.
We do recommend having your own car to make the most of the area - we’re some kilometres from the nearest town (though right on the main highway) and hitchhiking is difficult at present with the quiet roads.

If you want to experience life with a very relaxed rural kiwi family, we fit that bill! We’d like to take you hunting or fishing if time or weather allows. If you're not into that, we can lend you kayaks, give you advice on local attractions, hikes, or you can just simply relax or read a book. Also, if you’ve been on the road, here is a peaceful place to stay, recharge, enjoy hot showers and do your laundry.

We ask for about 3-4 hours help per day, five days per week, as well as participating in our family's normal daily housework. I’m not the time police, we work around your plans so you can make the most of your time here.

We provide a private room and your own bathroom, wifi, and most of your food if you do not have any special dietary requirements. If you do have a specific diet (vegan/veg/allergies) you'll need to provide your own proteins and specialty foods to hold you over for a few days, until we know more about you and can order what you need.
