Hello i am Wasim Akram and live in a small town of india named Gopalganj(Bihar). i am running a school which has around 150 students.They are mostly from underprivilaged and rural background. In order to provide my students help like making them learn from someone who is not from our culture(which seems to be a great idea)
We would like you to stay with us and tell kids about your country and culture,teach them English,yoga, meditation or something like that.we are friendly and we follow an age old saying 'atithi Devo bhawah' (guests are like God).

So if you want to know and feel about the real india,you are most welcome here.

Apart from all these you will be able to feel what indians from rural areas think about people of other countries...they basically revere them.

Language practice-You can teach your language so that our students have this opportunity to know about you and your country.

Teaching-One can help us in teaching subjects like Science,Maths,English as ours is a middle school it has students till grade 6 only.after school we have class for teaching people how to speak english so you can help us in that too.

Help with computers-One can teach them about computers as well

Other-You can help us create an environment of learning the way you did in your country which i think would be amazing.

You will be provided a separate room with washroom and clean drinking water. we provide beds, mattresses, pillows and blanket and food(lunch and dinner everyday.)

They can meet local people and get to know about their lives, We have Buddha's place( Kushinagar) and Kesariya where he got Enlightenment not very far from here (50km away)
I personally believe that travelling and visiting historical monuments of a country is fine but to get the real feel of the country culture and environment you got to spend some time with the local people.. Especially in india where more than 75% of the population is living in rural area.

First of all, this was a truly amazing experience, everyone was so nice and made the experience amazing. I’ll structure my review in 3 section, what is expected, what is given and what to prepare.

So the school is a narrow 4 storey building with a couple of classrooms on each level. While I was there, there were students up to class seven… read more however I know there are plans to include class eight. I worked from 900 to 1300 or 1330 (when the school finishes) for 10 days a fortnight (every other Saturday is off and all Sundays). I chose to teach the older kids (class 3 to 7) as they could understand my (somewhat mild) Australia better than the younger ones. The kids skew younger as the school isn’t very old, with most kids being under class 2, only having 2 and 4 kids in class 6 and 7 respectively. While I was there I mainly taught science, English and a passion project of geography as well as my home countries of Australia and New Zealand. I also did some school promotion in nearby villages with senior staff.

The accommodation was awesome, as was the hospitality. The apartment, only a 10 minute walk from the school, has two bedrooms, a bathroom and a kitchen. As I was the first guest the apartment was unfurnished other than the bed I used, however I know that over time there is the plan to bring more furniture and cooking implements (there were none upon my stay) into the apartment. As I am vegetarian and the host is not they struggled with what to feed me, however all the food was great. I actually felt there was too much food so I cut down to 2 meals a day. Unfortunately breakfast is non negotiable so I had breakfast (usually consisting of fried eggs, bread and a curry or local dessert) and dinner (we would go out to restaurants most of the time where there is an array of local and some Chinese options, meat eaters would be able to have more homemade meals). All costs are covered by the host, even for three meals which I had for the first week.

What to prepare; a couple of things are needed for the stay here. First thing is a mosquito net, I was kindly supplied one by the host, as even in March when I visited there were hundreds. If you have an accent other than generic North American, I would recommend taking action to limit your accent or even try an Indian accent. The kids had never interacted with a westerner before so they really struggled to understand me for the first couple of weeks even though I have worked on minimising my Australianisms. If you try and drink purified tap water (like myself) I’d recommend bringing a filter and not a purifier. I have the latter and there was often visible contaminants I couldn’t filter them out. All non-Asian people especially will be celebrities in the town, as people often said I was one of the first white people they had ever seen

With all that being said this host is amazing! I truly can’t recommend them enough and I’ll remember the kindness for a lifetime. Thank you, and particular thanks to Wasim and Anish for helping me through teaching and having some enlightening conversations. If you have read all the dribble, go to this school! You’ll love it!
