Many hats!! I finally figured out how to leave you a review!
Jules brought great energy and hard work to the ranch. She has a lot of skills which came in handy completing jobs around the ranch. She is comfortable and confident with all the animals on the ranch and did a great job helping me train horses. She was also a great asset with the

My time at the ranch "Cowgirl Up" together with Katy and the other workaway girls was an amazing experience. Unfortunately I stayed only two weeks at the ranch but I had the best time! The main task was to look after the horses. We got the horses ready for the guests and guided the trailride. We were also allowed to train the young horses together

We girls were responsible for the garden and looked after the dogs and chickens. All of the dogs are super cute and friendly. My best buddy was the cat Tinki, she is adorable and always up for some cuddles.
In the evening we girls cooked together in the Turkey Saloon and had some beers & shots together with Katy & Herb haha.
Katy is a very chill person and good to work with. It's never getting boring and you'll have a lot of fun. I can highly recommend staying on the ranch. I already miss you guys. See you soon & thank you again for everything!!
Ahhh and pls give Tinki a kiss from me lol
Cheers,

First of all, I would like to thank you again Katy, Sarah and Herb for welcoming me for these 2 amazing months and trusting me so much. I like to say that I found you « by accident » because I never planned to go to Canada, but ending up at your place was the best accident that ever happened to me.

Katy, words can’t express how thankful I am to you for trusting me so much with handling everything and everyone, teaching me so much about horses, and sharing your way of life and your stories with me.
I had the most challenging but also the most rewarding experience ever. I can say that I learnt a lot from you, and not only about horses. You are the kind of strong, smart and independent woman I aspire to become, and I admire the way you work with horses.
You trusted me right away even though I didn’t have any experience with training horses or working with youngsters and you allowed me to experience and learn on my own, which I am so grateful for. I honestly never thought I would be able to do all the things I did, but your trust gave me the confidence I needed to overcome my fear of making mistakes and not knowing what I was doing.
I can’t thank you enough for that.
I stayed at Katy’s in July and August 2019.
There was a lot of stuff to do, as there is a lot of animals to take care of and a lot of horses that need training, but also because it was high season with guests. I enjoyed it a lot though because I loved the animals very much and I was constantly doing something different and meeting a lot of different people.
There were 2 kinds of « typical » days depending on whether we had guests or not.
On days with guests, we would get the horses ready, welcome the guests, and ride for 1 or 2 hours with them in the morning. After lunch break, we would do the same thing in the afternoon if we had other guests. We would usually do 2 shorts trail rides a day like this, but once in a while guests would want to ride the whole day or take riding lessons in the arena.
On days without guests (and without rain), we would work with as many horses as possible, in the arena or on the trail.
I would ride every day if the weather was good, both with guests and on my own or with other volunteers. I didn’t expect to have the opportunity to ride so much and work with so many different horses. I was able to learn a lot with Katy and on my own, both with riding and ground work, using natural horsemanship.
In my opinion, you need to be responsible, independent and able to understand what needs to be done by observing because Katy is not the kind of person to watch her volunteers all the time or give many instructions. I think this is the reason why I loved this place so much : I had a lot of freedom and I was able to organise my time and work with whichever horses I wanted in the way I wanted.
Katy kind of lives in the middle of nowhere in a very quiet place surrounded by mountains. The landscape and the nature are breathtaking. The horses live all together in a big herd. There are also cats, dogs, turkeys, ducks, geese...
The living conditions are very basic and simple, but I had everything I needed.
I was living in the trailer, which is also the volunteers’ kitchen. Other volunteers would live on a big bus or in another trailer. There is no running water, so Katy hauls water from the river with big tanks connected to a sink and a shower (outside) and a washing machine (in the outhouse).
We would go to the food store about once a week and there is an amazing garden with plenty of veggies. Katy would cook and bake tasty and healthy meals once or twice a week and we would eat all together, taking into account my dietary requirements, which I appreciated very much.
There is electricity and wifi using a generator so I was not able to use my phone without it, which was weird at first but also made me realize how much time I waste everyday using technology.
I had never experienced this kind of living conditions and was a little bit scared that I would not be able to get used to them at first, but after a few days, I could not imagine living another way. I actually miss living like this. (By the way, showering outside with the sunset is the best thing ever).
I can say that this experience made me grow a lot and changed my perception of working with horses but also of life in general. Going back to my « real » life was a bit of a shock. I miss my « Canadian life », living and working with animals, especially horses, and I miss you all (even the weird noisy birds).
I think this is a great place if you love nature, animals, Western riding, and if you want to experience working with challenging horses and learn about natural horsemanship.
This was « only » 2 months, but they were definitely the 2 most incredible and intense and life-changing months of my life. I gained a lot of confidence, knowledge about horses and the other animals (and even muscles). I definitely recommend this place.
Thank you again for this unforgettable experience.

I had an amazing first workaway experience at Katy's place. I felt a little bit intimidated by Katy at first because of her badass-ness (like, who else could do something like wrangle a new horse, three pack horses and a dog while simultaneously telling a funny story?). But when I relaxed and got to know her, it became clear what an open,

Our work in May and June mostly consisted of riding horses to get them ready for the summer season (which I consider more fun than work!). We didn't have any set hours but helped out when help was needed and was definitely not over worked. Rather the other way around - me and my fellow workawayer sometimes felt like we didn't do enough to help out.
I would truly recommend coming here if you love horses (and dogs and cats and turkeys and bears...), can roll with the rusticness (like, you don't mind a windy outdoor shower in the driveway), can entertain yourself during time off, want to get away from the internet for a while, and want to have a really great rural Canada experience.
Packing tip: Bring a power bank, and clothes to deal with camping in anything between -5 and 30 degrees, especially if you're coming in spring or fall.Vous pouvez seulement contacter les workawayers avec une adhésion active.

My time here with Katy was a once in a lifetime experience!!! I stayed 7 weeks from July 7th to August 31st, 2018. I absolutely enjoyed my stay. The trailer I lived in is nice and cosy. It can get a bit cold in the morning, but a sweater will do it ;) The horses here are amazing. Especially Roper, I miss him! And I miss the cutest dogs, Molly and

Here at Katy’s, you have the opportunity to really challenge yourself and meet a lot of interesting tourists with a lot of stories to tell out on the trail rides. The scenery is just beyond description. If you want the real Canadian Rocky Mountain landscape, this is where to go. The view of the mountains are just amazing from the ranch and on the rides! Coming from Denmark, where it’s very flat, I was amazed by the landscape, every morning when I woke up! It’s best to be here with another workawayer, as you do get time by yourself, and you do make your own meals. There are also times where you have to be able to entertain yourself, because there’s no work to do, but of course you also work many times together with Katy, which is always fun work! The lifestyle here is primitive and rural, but for me, that was an experience in itself, and I really enjoyed getting away from technology and TV, and get the real nature experience! I loved our trips to McBride, the Dunster market, and Jasper. And being able to see a rodeo the very first day I arrived! That’s was so much fun!! I wish we had time for more trips. I also really enjoyed driving your car a few times, haha, thanks for that!
Katy is such a lovely person, and her daughter Sarah is a sweetheart. It was fun hearing all the stories Herb could tell!
Thank you for a lovely time Katy, I will never forget it!

I’m beyond grateful for my time with Katy. She really did push me out of my comfort zone and taught me a lot about myself and capabilities. I loved the simple living it provided such a stress free home. For me it provided a well needed detox from technology and city life.
Katy is an ideal employer. She wears her heart of gold on her sleeve and is incredibly genuine. Not to mention her influential kindness. Katy is hardcore. With a hardcore “cowboy” daughter - Sarah, who will love you from day 1. Her partner Herb is so entertaining and always has some humours comment to share. I appreciate you all. Thank you all for coming into my life.
Thanks again Katy!!! Until we meet again!Vous pouvez seulement contacter les workawayers avec une adhésion active.

Last but not forgotten finally our feedback! Katys place was our first stop of our 3-months-journey in canada and it were amazing 5 weeks and we really do miss you! Katy is a great and fun horsewoman and adventurer and we both learned a lot from her ways working with and around horses and nature!

Katy is a super generous, lovely, badass-cowgirl who let us work autonoumously and trusted a lot of responsibility in our hands. She was highly open for new ideas and invloved us always in her plans and ideas. We had the opportunity do ride daily and we could go explore the outdoors on horseback, it was amazing when we did ride into these blackbears :) Katy showed us a lot about training young horses, introduced us in the way of packing packhorses and the ways things work out there in the wilderness.
Katys daughter Sarah is a supertough girl (in the positive way:)) who made us laugh and sweat a lot and we miss her! Herb, Katys partner, is as well a really down to earth, pleasant person who was really nice to have around. They are all fun and generous people who love their life out of the way in their personal little paradise out there.
We recommend this place to anybody who loves horses, animals, the outdoors, wilderness, ranchwork and who are looking for gainign new skills in their horsebackriding/training.
