Description
I am Richard, the executive director for a local youth led organisation based in Mzuzu, Malawi. This organisation is a local youth-led non-profit based in Northern Malawi, operating since 2013. We work at grassroots level in Rumphi and Chitipa Districts, reaching communities with health and education support — focusing on HIV/AIDS awareness, girls’ education, ending early marriage, and economically empowering teen and disabled mothers through farming and small business.
We are currently expanding our work to include a nursery school and after-school programme for vulnerable children in our communities. We are looking for passionate volunteers who want to make a real and lasting difference in Northern Malawi.

Echange culturel et opportunités d'apprendre
Living and working with us is a genuine cultural immersion. You will stay with a local family, share meals of nsima, rice, beans, fish and local vegetables, and learn to prepare traditional food. You will be welcomed into community life — singing, dancing, local games and language. We will teach you basics of our local language and share our way of life openly.
In your free time and weekends we will support you to explore the extraordinary northern region of Malawi — Lake Malawi, the Nyika Plateau, Viphya mountains, Livingstonia and local markets. We provide transport support for excursions using the organisation vehicle.
All volunteers receive a certificate of participation and a recommendation letter on request.

Aide
We are looking for two specific types of volunteers. Please read carefully and apply only if you match one of these profiles — this helps us make your stay as meaningful and impactful as possible for both you and our communities.
TYPE 1 — COMMUNICATIONS AND GRANT WRITING VOLUNTEER
Who we need:
We are looking for volunteers with strong written English and experience finding, adapting and writing grant applications, funding proposals, donor reports or organisational communications. NGO, nonprofit or development sector experience is a strong advantage. You will work directly with our executive director on active funding applications and organisational communications.
What you will do:
∙ Research and identify grant and funding opportunities relevant to our work
∙ Draft, adapt and edit funding proposals and grant applications
∙ Write donor reports and stories of change from our community projects
∙ Support communications materials including pamphlets, reports and social media
∙ Train staff in report writing, proposal writing and basic record keeping
Ideal background:
Grant writer, communications professional, NGO/development worker, journalist, experienced writer with nonprofit knowledge
Length of stay:
Any length of stay is welcome — even one or two weeks can be genuinely useful if your skills are strong. Longer stays allow deeper impact.
TYPE 2 — EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION AND TEACHING VOLUNTEER
Who we need:
We are launching a nursery school and after-school programme for vulnerable children in our communities and need qualified or experienced early childhood educators and primary school teachers to help us build and run these programmes. This is a ground-floor opportunity to shape something meaningful and lasting.
What you will do:
∙ Work directly with children in our new nursery school programme
∙ Support and develop the after-school programme curriculum and activities
∙ Mentor and train local community members in early childhood education
∙ Help develop teaching materials and learning resources appropriate for our context
∙ Contribute to programme design and structure alongside our team
Ideal background:
Early childhood educator, nursery or primary school teacher, child development specialist, community educator, social worker with children’s programme experience
Length of stay:
We strongly prefer stays of 4 weeks minimum for education volunteers — the children and programme benefit most from consistency and relationship. Longer stays of 2-3 months are warmly welcomed and will have the greatest impact.

Hébergement
Volunteers stay in the executive director’s home or with a family of an organisation member — living as part of the family, sharing meals and daily life. This is genuine homestay immersion, not tourist accommodation. Internet access is available. You will eat the same food as our families: nsima, rice, irish and sweet potatoes, beans, vegetable, fish and meat.

A NOTE FROM RICHARD
We are a small but deeply committed organisation doing real work in communities that need it. We are not looking for observers — we are looking for people who want to roll up their sleeves and contribute something specific and lasting. If your skills match what we need, we would love to hear from you. Please write directly to tell us which volunteer role you are applying for and why your background fits.
