Description
My Name is Mukhwana. The director and founder of the Centre. I am passionate about children born with down-syndrome disability and other vulnerable children. We are currently creating awareness in the community, counseling and doing community visits where the needy and vulnerable children are.
We do the following activities.
* We support these children to acquire education and we create social interaction with other children.
* Reading, writing and drawing.
* We create time for playing games like football, netball, skipping the ropes and mind games.
* Discipleship. Teach them Bible stories,
* Guidance and counseling.
* Teach them art and craft and DIY skills
* Personal hygiene and general cleanness for healthy living.
* We also train the community groups (women, men and youth) with micro-finance entrepreneurship skills.
* Training parents/guardians on positive parenting and child care.
* Agro-business. We have provided two spraying pumps and two watering cans for men and women groups.
* Entrepreneurship skills to improve on individual income generation.
OUR TESTIMONY.
Our daughter Esther (third born) is born with Down syndrome and we discovered it at three months. It was long after she was born. This condition was not detected at birth and the news caused a lot fear in us, we wondered how the relatives and the community will look at us. However through research, counseling from friends and prayers we managed to over come the fear and trauma.
Many parents here believe that this disability is caused by bad luck or witchcraft. It’s also true that children with downs syndrome are sometimes hidden, abandoned or neglected by their parents and encounter discrimination in the community because of the above mis-conception. As a result, these children find it hard to integrate with fellow children in school, places of worship and other community activities due to fear of shame from the public.
We are the voice of hope to parents of children with disabilities and going through the same fear and challenges like we did. We are here to encourage children born with Down syndrome that they are like other normal children. They need love; care and patience because they have the potential to achieve great milestones in every aspect of life.
We have three locally paid staff.
1) The Social worker. This one does the community visits and sensitization and teaching entrepreneurship skills and other social human needs and also does counseling.
2) The Nurse. This one attends to the children's general health needs and makes referrals to where necessary.
3) The Teacher. This teaches the reading and writing skills and also sounds/verbal training for the children with down syndrome. we have plans of hiring another teacher to help the needy and orphans also with reading, writing skills, singing and playing with them.
This team doesn't work alone but along side other local volunteers to achieve our goals.
