    Description

Our homestead is on the North of Vancouver Island. We have 17 acres in a Canadian Temperate Rain Forest on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Please send us a message if you have an interest in traveling and working with us in 2023!

Our goal is to live off the grid and be self sufficient. We are generating our electricity from solar as well as other clean renewable energy sources. Our heat comes from wood stoves which we also use for cooking and smoking food/dehydrating food. Our goal over the next 2 years is to grow 100% of our own food in our garden and fruit tree orchard, produce 100% of our own power/electricity, and build infrastructure for a recycled shipping container "earthship” house. Our property is 17 acres of heavily treed conifer forest. We are a “boat access only” homestead and we will be able to pick up workers/guests in our boat from the nearest dock (there are shuttles that travel up and down Vancouver Island that will bring you to our nearest town Port Hardy).

Nicole, Jake, and our baby Fox are a young couple creating a 100% sustainable farm/homestead which is self sufficient providing all the food, energy, shelter, and fun needed on site! For those willing to work with us we will be providing opportunities in gardening, fruit tree planting/growing/care, building healthy bio-dynamic/organic compost/soil, and building recycled and earthen structures. We will also be giving hands on experience with harvesting, gathering, and foraging for 100% of our own food.

All cultures and languages welcome but Jacob speaks Mandarin Chinese and Spanish, so those who speak Spanish and/or Mandarin Chinese would be a great language exchange.
Currently accomodations are in a seperate bunkie cabin and/or yurt.

Workaway guest should bring proper attire which consists of work clothes, warm jacket(s), rain gear (pants/top), rain boots, work boots, and possibly scarf, hat, warm gloves, and beanie/toque. Jake and Nicole can provide mosquito net (summer), work gloves, and other safety gear like glasses and earplugs. Also bring any extra snacks you may need, or entertainment like books, phone, games, etc as there is wifi on-site. Please also bring a fun attitude, good manners, and a drive to stay clean, healthy, and learn new things each day. Should be around 25 hours of work per week!

    House Rules:
    1. Keep guest area clean, run wood stove to keep guest quarters dry
    2. No Drugs and No Smoking
    3. Any friends or guests must be approved by Jake and Nicole
    4. Help with dishes after meals
    5. Stay Safe
    6. Show Respect to the Land
    7. Improve Guest Area, leave it better than you found it
    8. Keep yourself clean and maintain good physical hygiene
    9. Please do not geotag our exact location

Our area is a natural and ecological wonderland. There are opportunities for mushroom foraging, hiking, boating, swimming, bird watching, animal sightings, whale watching and encounters, fishing, clamming, crabbing, and prawning. Our area is a temperate Canadian rainforest and living here is an awe inspiring immersion into the flora and fauna of our natural world! Organic methods: Organic Soil, Green Manure, Mulch, Compost, Seaweed, Vermiculture, Compost Toilets, Compost Tea, Bio-Char. Certifications: Our Homestead is beyond organic! We are running a permaculture based bio-dynamic, organic homestead but we are not interested in the certified organic label since we are not commercial! Current projects: 10 kWh solar panel system with lithium ion battery back up, shipping container home, earthship home, fruit tree orchard, raised bed garden, felling trees and milling wood on site, building with clay cob and wood, as well as seasonal work such as catching fish and smoking fish, mushroom foraging, wild herb harvesting, wild berry harvesting.
