Description
Hello Workawayers!!
*we have jobs in health care and can only consider volunteers who take covid-19 seriously and are committed to taking precautions, especially during travel and out in public *
We are well into the first growing season of the new decade at our 3 near to each other locations: a small farm; a heritage house in a small town, and one other family location in nearby culturally rich Owen Sound.
The farm is a lovely heritage farmstead on the eco-marvellous Bruce Peninsula. 7 acre property includes small barn, wonderful old apple trees, large gardens and Wellness Studio. After 5 years of running a great little local foods cafe, in 2013 we began transitioning to other ways of utilizing our harvest. One primary emphasis is now herbs and you will have ample opportunity to learn about growing, wildcrafting, harvesting and using herbs for food, medicine, personal and home care. We grow and harvest over 100 varieties of herbs throughout the growing season. This year begins a small meat and produce CSA. Our other primary emphasis is homestead, heritage livestock. We have a small ever changing herd of goats, Black Welsh Mountain and Icelandic sheep, and various birds. Recently two wee pigs arrived on the scene! Our operation is non certified organic and we are currently going through the Canadian Organic Growers Organic Success Program. The Wellness studio hosts yoga, registered massage therapy, and other wellness programming.
My new home is in the small town of Wiarton) located just a few blocks from the waterfront and Bruce trail access, where you will have your accommodations and access to the cooking, cheesemaking & medicine making classes that may be happening while you are volunteering. You may also help with the "90% Project" in which we are gradually transforming 90%of the gardens & landscaping to be edible and/or medicinal!

Fencing and shelter building are ongoing. Care and interaction with the animals are year round activities, and routine daily animal care will be part of what you will help with!
Summer activities include cultivating, weeding, harvesting, tending, succession planting, moving the paddock for the animals for fresh rotational grazing, etc.
Herb harvesting & processing begins in late spring early / summer, and goes on through the rest of the season. We will also be making medicines ( tinctures, salves, cough syrups etc), skin care products, tea blends and more through the year.
Fall focuses on harvesting, canning, cider making & winter preparation, including firewood and preparing winter quarters for the animals.
Property building, maintenance and development processes including keeping the trail network and labyrinth maintained are ongoing through spring summer and fall.
Winter helpers are welcome, focusing on outbuilding projects, seed starting, firewood, & renovation projects, herbal product making, and animal care. Animals now need hay/grain/other feeds as they are in their winter paddocks without access to grazing.
Spring focus is on preparing the gardens (often including new beds), seed starting, caring for transplants, and planting seedlings and seeds into the garden. Caring for newborn kids and lambs.
We invite you to join our our friendly crew expanding, planting and cultivating herb (culinary and medicinal) & veggie gardens, harvesting and processing the harvest (canning, drying, freezing, juicing, salting, etc.), maintaining established perennial beds, reclaiming orchards, repairing & modifying the barn for animals, etc. Helpers take a fair share of routine household tasks in addition to volunteer hours (eg. participating in supper prep or clean up; 60-90 mins per week contributing to keeping common spaces and home accommodation clean). After a day of good hard work, we often relax with a soak in the outdoor hot tub ( at the farm), or pop out to the shore ( or jump into the pool in town) for a swim in the summer!
In 2020 there are monthly Cheesemaking classes and bimonthly medicine making classes at the in town location, and if you are here when there is a class you are welcome to participate. You also have access to reduced fee yoga classes at the Wellness Studio, or you can often trade for the classes.

A good work ethic is important! *covid 19 will restrict some of these activities, especially festivals & group activities*
Free-time activities include boating, biking, hiking, swimming, exploring, frequent music and campfires, and using the labyrinth on the farm property. Wellness activities available on site & available locally in abundance. Markets, festivals, library, shops and special events, plus hiking and waterfront access all within a short walk of the in town location.
Winter activities include snowshoeing, x-country skiing, ice skating, and stargazing; plus of course board games!
We are in an extremely beautiful and diverse area and always invite volunteers when we are going hiking, swimming, or to new ( to you) locations. Google Bruce Peninsula, Sauble Beach, Owen Sound if you'd like.
We generally pick up volunteers at the bus in Owen Sound.Informations complémentaires
