Ich war 2.5 Woche bei der Familie Hahn und ich kann mit Freude sagen es waren 2.5 Wochen die ich nie vergessen werde. Die ganze Familie hat mich ganz herzlich aufgenommen und immer dafür gesorgt das es mir gut geht. Auch an den Tagen an denen ich Krank war, waren sie für mich da und haben sich um mich gekümmert, wofür ich sehr dankbar bin. Ich bin
… read more für vieles Dankbar wie zb. der Austausch, die Stadtbesichtigungen, das dazu gelehrnt vom Haus Umbau, aber wofür ich am dankbarsten bin sind die Menschen die ich getroffen habe. Ich fühlte mich wie ein Teil der Familie und man wurde auch so behandelt. Patricia die sozusagen meine Gastmutter war, war für mich mehr eine Freundin eine sehr liebevolle und offene Person mit der man über alles sprechen kann und welche dich gerne mit zum Salsa (was übrigens nicht so einfach ist, aber unglaublich Spass macht) nimmt. Martina ist die Mutter die jeder gern haben möchte. Sie ist ein sensibler Mensch was es mir immer einfach gemacht hat mich wohlzufühlen, weil sie sich auch darum gekümmert hat das man sich wohlfühlt. Klaus ist der Mann der immer einen Spruch auf Lager hat und mit dem man viel lachen und lernen kann. Was das umbauen des Hauses anging war er immer der Mann der wusste was zu tun war, ich konnte viel von im lernen. im Grossen und Ganzen war es für 2.5 Wochen die ich gerne in Erinnerung behalte und ewig dankbar dafür sein werde.

I spent about 3 weeks in the company of Patricia, Martina, and Klaus. When I first arrived they immediately made me feel safe and welcome in the small community of the lovely village of Schmalfelden. I was looking for some time abroad where I could get aquainted with manual work - which I had little to no experience of before this - and I found
… read more exactly what I needed. My first week was a full immersion, since we were getting ready for a barn party that was definitely one of the highlights of my stay. Cleaning and gardening were some of the tasks expected of me: the work was intense but never unbearable, and it always came with clear instructions and generous breaks when needed. The workload per day has always been very flexible, leaving plenty of time for exploring the surroundings and relaxing in the beautiful garden of the house (my favourite spot quickly became the yellow hammock under the fruit trees ;))
Schmalfelden is a lovely place immersed in the nature of the region, perfect for evening walks accompanied by lovely conversations, and bike rides in the fields and in the forest.
The village per se does not have plenty of connections to urban centres, but Patricia and her parents have always been so kind to give me a lift to the nearest train station: cities like Nürnberg and Würzburg are just a train ride away, and are perfect for solo daily trips.
And what to say with regard to my hosts? I got to know Patricia, Klaus and Martina better and better during our work and meals together - which, by the way, were always delicious, as Martina is an incredible cook! Even though I spent only three weeks in their home I felt so grateful to have them be a part of my everyday life and receive their kindness and effort to make me feel as comfortable as possible.
I appreciated the effort they put in communicating in english with me (unfortunately, I do not speak any German): it was a great opportunity for cultural exchange, as I picked up here and there some bits of German vocabulary, and in turn I shared my knowledge of English when needed.
In particular, I felt the atmosphere of warmth doing some home activities such as baking cookies and making marmelade (from scratch!) with Martina, singing along together to some good music.
To conclude, I made great memories here in Baden-Württenberg with this splendid, caring family, which I will cherish for the times to come. I can only hope to have future experiences even half as nice as the one I had with them - they really set my expectations very high for Workaways!!!
I really hope their Barn Party will become a yearly occurrence, because that would be a great opportunity to visit them again and spend some time together for what will become the most anticipated event in the region ;) This time around, I promise I will show up speaking better German!

Staying with Patricia and her parents was such an enriching experience for me. I upped myself with plenty of new and wholesome experiences that involved driving a tractor (and riding on the back of one!) and getting to see lots the local very typical, beautiful German countryside and towns. I was invited to meals, drinks with friends and even
… read more other Workawayers, trips to local gardens, castles and towns, and given the every day luxury of a hammock, a bike, jacuzzi usage and fresh cherries to pick and eat when I wanted. The highlight for me though was getting to socialise with the family and their friends and with the other Workawayer, Cecilia, with whom I shared the experience with for a few days before leaving.
My job when I arrived was to get the barns and outdoors areas ready for a huge barn party the family had organised. This involved plenty of cleaning, dusting and gardening jobs, which I was either left to do in my own time and on my own schedule or with the family with a in-it-together attitude. I was treat with lots of kindness and generosity by Patricia and her parents, who hosted me with lots of appreciation for my presence and work. Gratitude like that goes a long way on Workaway and I felt very happy to do what I could for them because of that. Abi is a very easy-going, happy and reliable person. It felt like she is a part of our family since the first day. There was a lot of hard work to do and she still did it with a lot of enthusiasm and a perfect result. … read more model mother figure who has a heart for everyone. Klaus is the man who knows how to do everything around the house, and you can learn a lot from him. He welcomes you warmly and is understanding. Patricia is a very well-behaved and kind girl, shy, with whom you can spend time laughing and discussing relaxing topics. We still keep in touch with them, exchange pictures, and are expecting them in Romania. I would gladly return there anytime, and in the future, we will definitely meet again. J'ai passé mon mois d'Aout dans cette famille. Mon séjour était génial. La famille était très gentille et était au petit soin avec moi. La langue n'était pas une barrière et nous arrivions toujours à trouver un moyen pour se comprendre.
Les paysages et les villages aux alentours valent le coup d'œil.
