Description
This is a beautiful place on the landscape of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. In between 18 hectars of park and wood the almost 800 year old castle provides around 30 beds for guests. It is also a location for events. On sundays we have a Café in the castle.

In addition we are rising up a self-sustaining ecological agriculture in the surrounding garden. We use permaculture and old methods of farming and it is a learning project. At the moment we as a family - Jan, Anna, Isalie and Joshua and some Co-Living and Co-working people run this project with all our heart.

We are looking for workaways as solo, couple or group up to four. By the way... we are christians. So we invite you to join us for a little bible-reading and praying in the morning and talking about the day. Any helping hand is needed in the areas of gardening, general maintenance, housekeeping, kitchen and animal-care. You will have a good time here - not only to learn the language but having insight in ecological agriculture and a fullfilling way of living!

To plan projects we are looking for helpers that like to stay for a longer term up to 4 month.

You will not only learn the German language but also benefit from this place with nothing but nature around. Calm down, find honest and caring people, learn and share ideas about alternative ecological agriculture, be a person of trust for for the guests you will meet at the watercastle.

You can be by the baltic sea with it`s nice white sandy beach within 45 minutes by car. Maybe you`ll find the deeper meaning of living here? It is a free offer and up to your mind to take part in spiritual themes or prayers.

Any kind of garden help is required. We make wood for the winter and deck it together.
We also have horses, dogs, cats and chickens. In the castle there is always work to do like cooking, kitchen help, housekeeping and renovation. Help can also include general maintenance and housekeeping.

You and your partner or friends will live in one or more room(s) in one part of the castle. In the summertime we provide a mobil home and alternative accommodation. Sometimes the team members will have lunch or other meals together but there is also an opportunity to make food by your own.

Within 45 minutes by car you will be at the baltic ocean beaches. The cities of Rostock and Stralsund are also about 45 minutes by car away, Greifswald 25 minutes. There is the museum of marine science in Stralsund, a big bird-park in Marlow or famous tourist areas on the island of Rügen or Fischland-Darß-Zingst. The nearest city with shopping facilities is Grimmen about 12 km from our place. There rarely goes a bus so you can go with us by car or using your own car. The next train station is Rakow or Grimmen.

We had the pleasure to stay at this beautiful place for 4 weeks during summer. Even though it's been already a while since we left, our experience from here remains still very fresh in our memory.

The family is very religious but also very open-minded to non-religious people. It all depends on mutual respect. During the time we stayed here, we could learn a lot of new things about their life style and their convictions. We participated with them on prayers, on bible studies, we went also together to a church few times. This aspect of our stay was very enriching. They were all always prepared to answer our questions concerning religion and especially Jan and Kezia were very talkative about the topic.

We were accommodated in a room in the tour of Wasserburg. The room was well-equipped with its own bathroom and fridge and its position also guaranteed a certain privacy. The whole Wasserburg is a really nice and vast place, ideal to relax in a very calm atmosphere. It has a big garden and we were spending outside a lot of time, thanks to extraordinary nice and warm weather.

The garden also provides supplies of vegetables for the kitchen. During our whole stay, we could eat a lot of good and healthy vegetarian food. The kitchen is very huge and we had the possibility to prepare some food for us whenever we wanted, but for the majority of time, we were eating with other family members.

Working tasks were very various. Among others, we were working in the garden (planting tomatoes in the greenhouse, mowing grass, watering plants), helping in the kitchen (helping with preparation of meals and with washing the dishes), helping with restoring of the castle (painting walls and furniture). We also spent some time looking after children and playing with them, they are both very nice and easy-going. Sometimes, we were helping with cleaning of rooms for castle guests. For all different tasks, there was always somebody to give us some advice or to help us whenever we had some difficulties. It was usually Anna who decided about the work for every day, she was really nice and tolerant. For about one week, there was another workawayer with us, Mileena, a very friendly girl who was doing some of the tasks with us.

As well as working tasks, our working time was also very variable. Some days, we had a lot to do and we spent a lot of time working but we were completely free on other days. During these days, the family took us to see different places in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. We had the occasion to go to Rostock, Stralsund (also to the ocean museum), to the bird park in Marlow, the island of Rügen, we went swimming twice in the Baltic Sea. We appreciated a lot the possibility to discover this interesting region. Ines also took us three times to see a soccer match, as we were there during the European championship, which was very nice from her part.

Wasserburg is also a good place to improve your German skills. The whole family was very patient with us and they were trying to speak with us very clearly and slowly, so that we could learn some new words easily. Besides this, we could also meet some of their friends. All in all, we spent a great time here and we can only recommend it.

I had the honor of staying with Anna and her family for 5 days at the Wasserburg. When I arrived in Stralsund, I was greeted by the friendly Jan, who showed me around the beautiful town and gave me a little bit of a history lesson. We enjoyed the lovely weather and ice cream from a local café, and we met a family friend and were soon joined by… read more Anna and the children and two other Workawayers, who were a lovely young couple from France. We all had some lunch, and went to the local church and the aquarium which were both splendid sites. Anna took care of our admission to all of these sites, and we were joined by the sweet Kezia at the aquarium and then later went to a local Chinese place for dinner.

I became very quickly acquainted with my fellow Workawayers, as we all had much in common, and spent a lot of time together due to the nature of our work around the Turow.

The accommodations at the Wasserburg were absolutely perfect. The building that the Workawayers are set up is very clean and cozy, despite the fact that it is 800+ years old. I got my own room with a sink and furniture and an extremely comfortable bed. I also had my own bathroom right outside of my room. We had unlimited access to the kitchen (which was a blessing, as it is huge and fully stocked) and were lucky enough that Anna and her family have a sweet tooth, as there were always delicious fresh produce and candies to enjoy :)

As far as the work went, we were very fortunate to have tasks that could be completed as a group, as we often helped 8-9 hours each day. We would often rise around 09:30, have breakfast (it was usually all put together by Anna, but on the first morning we prepared a hearty meal), help until 15:00 and break for lunch, and then finish the necessary tasks. Majority of the help consisted of refurbishing & painting old furniture, cooking & cleaning, and setting up the place for the guests that come for the Wasserburg experience. I had the joy of assisting Kezia one evening with the horses and donkeys, who were all very sweet and easy-going.

We were fortunate enough to have Kezia as our German-to-English translator for some of our communication, as well as our bible readings. Additionally, there was an English translator during the church service that we attended on Saturday, which was also quite nice.

As someone who is not religious, I would suggest that any future volunteers be aware that this is quite a religious atmosphere. Non-secular activities were not shared by the larger group (thanks again to Ines for taking Aneta, Corantin and I to Greifswald to view the France-Germany match!) which is the reason for limited Wifi access, bible study, recognition of the Saturday sabbath, attending church, prayer before meals, and other factors. However, they were quite open-minded to friendly debate and were happy to answer our questions regarding their religion and faith.

My favorite experience was going to the beach near Rostock with the family after church service and potluck. We were very fortunate to have perfect weather, and all enjoyed a few hours of sunshine- even if the water was very cold!!

Overall, this was a wonderful experience and I am so thankful that my positivity in the Christian-Protestant faith was restored by this generous and welcoming German family. The only thing that I wish was that I could have stayed a little longer. Regardless, I hope to return to the Wasserburg and to see how much has been updated to this beautiful estate, as well as to improve my German and enjoy more of the activities in the estate.
