Hi! I'm Mario, I spent 12 years working for a humanitarian aid organization in the Middle East, Eastern Europe, Asia and Africa. For the last couple of years I've been living with my son in our small farm in Ponte de Lima together with a bunch of chicken, dogs, and cat.

I've lived on 3 continents, soaking up diverse cultures! As an engineer with a background in computer networks and telecommunications, I love tinkering with sensors, microcontrollers, and building home automation systems (including some pretty cool automated chicken coops!).
I'm home most of the time, working on the different projects, can therefore supervise and assist volunteers with the tasks, while sharing some of my stories and local culture.
Off-Grid Enthusiast & Permaculture Learner: I'm passionate about off-grid systems, construction, and electricity. Every year, we experiment with permaculture techniques, adapting them to our unique environment.
Skill Sharing & Collaboration: We frequently collaborate with local carpenters and other skilled workers, constantly expanding our knowledge base. This collaborative spirit extends to volunteers as well!
Practical Skills & Delicious Food: Want to learn how to bake sourdough bread, use a wood-fired oven, cook over an open fire, grow vegetables, or master hand tools? We can teach you all that and more!

Looking for volunteers with good physical condition, able to move a loaded wheelbarrow for example.
During school holidays we also accept someone with child care experience to spend some time with my son and take care of the meals and the house.
I'm home most of the time, working on the different projects, can therefore supervise and assist volunteers with the tasks, while sharing some of my stories and local culture.
Here are some tasks we always need help with:
- Clearing brush
- Cutting old trees and firewood
- Digging and moving dirt
- Shopping, cooking and cleaning the house
- Taking care of the vegetable garden and feeding animals (chicken, dog, cats)

Sam is a great housekeeper, everything was kept neat and clean during her stay, including a few days I was absent.
She's also great with the animals, despite our rooster being a bit aggressive.

Edu only spent a week at our place, but he didn't stop for a moment!
He is a very strong and energetic volunteer, eager to learn any task.
Edu moved dozens of wheelbarrows of dirt to prepare the vegetable garden and helped to plant several plants.
Tidiness is also a strong point, Edu kept everything clean and organized in the house.

Johnny is a passionate chef. He can cook gourmet dishes and the best burgers in the world. He is also an expert baker and will teach you how to make sourdough bread.

Rami had his first workaway (and farming) experience with us, but was very hard-working and always ready to take on difficult tasks. He learned quickly how to mix and pour concrete, cut brush, building with wood and concrete, take care of the animals, etc.
