Hello world! I’m Linda, a 32-year-old Italian girl living in Milan. I’m not ready to settle down just yet, I’d rather have as many experiences as possible and keep traveling until I feel like stopping!
I work in video games, I’m very social, and I’m pretty good at handling myself in any situation. I lived in Japan for a while and have traveled around Asia, Africa, the US, and of course Europe. I’m always looking for new situations where I can meet lots of interesting people.

I’m a designer, so I’m very comfortable using computers. I’ve done a lot of work for social media, creating content and managing editorial calendars.
I can shoot and edit both videos and photos.
I speak English very well, and I learn new languages quickly.
I’m very good at managing and interacting with people, and I’m a very precise and organized person. I’m comfortable relating to people of all ages, including tourists and customers, and I also enjoy spending time with children. I’m also a strong team player.
I love animals and pet care (I have two cats myself).

The weeks I spent here were an unforgettable experience, and I would go back in a heartbeat. I honestly couldn’t recommend this Workaway more, if you’re a cat lover. Greg and Amy have built a beautiful shelter in a relatively short time, and it’s still growing, now home to almost a hundred cats.

There are two possible places to stay: a room at … read more the hostel right in the city centre, so you’re surrounded by all the conveniences of the city, although the room is smaller; or a room inside the shelter itself, which is a house with a garden a little further from the centre. You’ll need to take a Grab or get a lift from Greg and Amy, but in return the room is spacious, comfortable, air-conditioned, and has a private bathroom. I stayed at the shelter, which meant I didn’t have to commute to work every morning because I was already there. All the cats were also always available for cuddles and afternoon naps whenever I wanted! That more than made up for the slightly inconvenient location, with no shops nearby.

The work is pretty relaxed. Keep in mind that we’re talking about almost a hundred cats, so obviously there will be a lot of poop to clean up every morning, various smells, cats that need cleaning, and litter boxes and bowls to wash. Nothing terrible, just be aware that taking care of animals isn’t only about cuddling them. While I was there, there was also a girl named Qis at the shelter every day of the week, taking care of the general cleaning, so you’ll always have an extra pair of hands. Greg and Amy usually take care of the cats with more specific health problems or those who need medication, while what you do depends a bit on what you’re comfortable with. For example, I cleaned eyes and applied antibiotic creams several times a day to cats who needed it, helped with giving fluids and preparing special food. If you can do these little bits of medical care and cat cleaning it's better, because the more attention they get, the better they are, and there are so many of them, Greg and Amy have a lot to focus on so it's important to be helpful. Otherwise, you can mostly focus on cleaning the shelter.
The cats are all doing well and are perfectly safe to cuddle, kiss and sleep with! In my free time at the shelter, I loved to relax on the sofa with a good book, surrounded by cuddly cats. They are honestly the CLINGIEST cats I’ve ever met, they love humans so much, so be prepared to be absolutely showered with affection.

As for the location: Kuching is perfect for a Workaway, because there are so many typical Borneo experiences you can do, even as afternoon trips after work. Some of the main ones are the orangutans at Semenggoh, Bako National Park, trips outside the city into the rainforest to see waterfalls and traditional villages, and river cruises looking for wildlife. The city itself is fairly big, convenient and tourist-friendly.

Another huge part of the experience for me was getting to go out with Greg, Amy and their friends every evening to their usual bar in the city centre. If you feel like socialising, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to meet lots of interesting people, both foreigners living in Kuching but, even more so, locals. They were incredibly kind and invited me along to various trips and events, and I got to have some really interesting conversations about the cultural and political sides of Borneo and Sarawak, which is a part of Malaysia that feels completely different from the rest of the country. For example, the atmosphere is muuuch more relaxed and fun than in West Malaysia.

For me, it was the perfect experience and I honestly wouldn’t change a thing. Greg and Amy are genuinely great people, they absolutely love what they do, and they’re probably the most laid-back people in the world. They’ll happily encourage you to take days off whenever you want to explore Sarawak.
I got incredibly attached to the cats and I already miss them so much. Thanks to everyone at Jak Ma’an for all the time and drunken nights we spent together! I’d love to come back one day and see everyone again.
