Description
Dear hosts and fellow workawayers,
I am Johannes from Germany and I'm 22 years old. My goal in using workaway is to travel the world in a truly authentic way, by not just being a tourist but really immersing myself in foreign cultures, getting to know interesting people and their ways of living, and develop my own skillset and personality in the process. Oh and the fact that all this is possible on a low-budget is also a big plus;)
ABOUT ME
I would consider myself a very friendly, respectful and uncomplicated person, with a positive mindset. When I choose to travel via workaway, I am aware that my trip doesn't revolve primarily around relaxing but more about experiencing and adventure. That also means I am ready to put in effort, not only in the work I will do, but also in communicating, learning and adapting to different situations. That can be a challenge, but it is a challenge I love to face, because amazing experiences and relationships can come from that.
MY INTERESTS/HOBBIES
- SPORTS: I love sports, both watching and playing. I've played football for many years, I love running, working out in the gym, hiking and recently got a bit into kayaking. I also enjoy watching football and going to the stadium, to me it's one of the most fascinating things in the world. In school I even wrote a 15-page-paper about the importance of football for our society, so I'm happy to share and discuss my passion about that ;)
- MUSIC: I played the drums for about 10 years, I took piano lessons for about 4 years and I also taught myself a little guitar, which is currently my favorite instrument to play
- NATURE: The older I get (I know I sound like a really old guy sometimes;) ), the more joy and peace I feel by being in nature. I enjoy hiking and I would really like to learn more about outdoor survival, going on adventures, sleeping in tents, going fishing/hunting, ...
- HEALTH: I believe being in good health is one of the most important aspects of a good life, and learning more about the human body, nutrition, fitness, and being in good health in general gives me great joy. I value high quality and natural food, I enjoy being/getting in shape, and using my body and mind in ways they are meant to be used, which can sometimes be difficult in some of today's living environments. However, for me it's always about balance, so I enjoy having some fast-food, delicious sweet treats or a cold beer as well from time to time.
EXPERIENCE/SKILLS
- I have some "job" experience in working with kids besides my previous workaways (see below), as I used to be a supervisor for primary school kids during summer vacation. I enjoyed it and always received very positive feedback from kids, parents and colleagues, so I think I did well there.
- as I am currently studying human-computer-interaction, I might be able to help you out or teach you something about this field
- I'd say I am a decent cook, and I enjoy cooking and baking
- I'm physically and mentally fit/stable, and enjoy manual and physical labor, but I do not have lots of skills or experience with it, besides helping out my grandparents by doing some basic gardening work
PREVIOUS WORKAWAYS
So far I only visited two workaway projects, both in Tanzania, Africa. Both projects were at a school, with the goal to develop the educational program there, teach and play with the kids, helping out in pretty much any way you can and want to. It was rather easy-going but still taught me a lot about adapting to different situations/cultures, and experience living in a different environment and living standard.
CONCLUSION
I'm probably not the most skilled workawayer you could find, but I am definitely coming with the right mindset, and ready to learn, adapt and grow. I'm really looking forward to get to know many different people and ways of living, and I am happy to exchange culture, values, stories and discuss about pretty much anything with an open-mind. -

I stayed at the school for 4 weeks and it was such a wonderful and memorable time.
The bus ride from Arusha was already an adventure for someone like me, who'd never been to Africa before. But the scenery was absolutely gorgeous!!! At the school I was welcomed by everyone: Juliana, all the other volunteers, … read more
