Description
Hello! We are Jenna (31) and Livia (35), a couple living in London. Our long term plan is to move to the north of Spain and have our own land, but we'd like to get more experience through Workaway first. Jenna has done lots of Workaway placements around the world in her early twenties, Liv has done one (visiting Anna - Jenna's former host in Greece). We speak Spanish, French, Portuguese and English. Liv grew up in southern Portugal and has been in London for the last decade. In London, Jenna has worked with migrants for the past 8 years, currently working for a free legal advice charity and at a music venue running the box office in the evenings. Liv works at a coworking space, but used to run film festivals and is a big cinema lover. We both love gardening, cooking, eating, and animals.

This is a really interesting concept with a lot of devoted, inspiring and hardworking people behind it. I had to cut my stay short so I spent just under a month there, but it still taught me a lot. They have beautiful grounds which they use as an outdoor classroom, and whilst I was there they had parents/musicians come in to teach drumming, harp,… read more and cinema skills. Their curriculum works by having a weekly theme, i.e 'water', 'Catalunya', 'inventors', and this theme is then applied to the different subjects for that week. They have Montessori materials for maths and literacy. I believe this was the first year that the children had had compulsory lessons, in years prior they had attended if they wanted to so for the older children this was a big adjustment. From 10-12 each day I was alone with the younger children, reading stories, playing games, chatting in English. This is an ideal time to let your creative playful teaching methods flow! In the afternoons I helped the English teacher Alba out, co-teaching through games she'd devised. Then I did playground duty with Layla before we took lunch together. Every Wednesday the whole school goes on a trip.
I was the first Workawayer Manel and Ana had had, and my stay with them was massively different from the other families I had stayed with in that it felt a lot more formal and everyone kept very much to themselves. They cut me a key after a couple of weeks so I could go out and explore and do things independently. I spent a lot of time with their younger daughter who is an amazing girl, she was very keen to practice English and to teach me some Catalan! We did a lot of swimming, crafts and walks around the town. The family have household staff which isn't something I was expecting and sat a little weirdly with me as someone from a modest background. I also had to go out and buy my own breakfast before school quite often. Location wise, they live in an enormous old house that takes up a whole block, a gorgeous beach is 5 minute walk away, the train station is 15 minutes walk away and it's about half an hour journey to Barcelona. I worked 10-2 each day so you have lots of time to go off and explore! You can get a 10 return trip ticket for 20 euros which is good. There are lots of little cafes in Premia and the teachers are really sociable and lovely as is Amparo who co-ordinates the Workaway! A couple of parents had approached me to do English play session with their kids outside school which would have been a great opportunity had I been able to stay. All in all, my time here was interesting and it was a good introduction into non-mainstream schooling. I think it would best suit someone that has a TEFL or some teaching experience or experience running kids camps for example, as I’d say the schools emphasis is mostly on learning through play rather than being democratic in the ways I’d researched before I came.
