Hi!

My name is Madeleine (but I go by May)! I’m 24, recently graduated, and coming from a little pocket of greenery in Los Angeles, CA.

Before this, I was teaching dance to 3rd-5th graders, but I’ve left to take a gap year and get to know the world a bit better (hopefully kickstarting some sort of performance career in the nearish future?)!

Workaway looks like my chance to create more meaningful, lasting connections with people and places through mutual aid and reciprocity. I feel determined to give what I can, where I can… so I’m very excited to puzzle out new languages (and share what I know of English, if that’s of interest) and dip into rich cultural histories and practices and care for old homes and new gardens and human and nonhuman animals and catch falling leaves in new countries!!!

I’m an open-minded and enthusiastic learner who grew up swinging from tree branches and saving bees from bird baths. I have volunteer experience distributing food and resources to local families, protecting wildlife through trash and debris clean-up events, and I’ve recently started to learn to cook (slowly but surely…). I love to draw, dance, and paint, and have done a little bit of work with clay, woodcarving, and basket weaving with natural fibers (pine needles!). I’m especially interested in permaculture, animal care, homesteading, and arts projects; if you’re willing to teach me, I’m willing to learn.

Quelles sont vos compétences ?

Some areas that I have experience with:

Gardening! The home that I grew up in has a fairly large garden, so I spent a decent amount of time digging holes, planting seeds and seedlings, watering, and harvesting fruits, vegetables, and herbs with my family.

Housekeeping! I have lots of experience sweeping, vacuuming, dusting, washing/drying dishes, doing laundry, doing meal prep, decluttering, etc. I have gotten multiple housesitting gigs, often lasting for a week or two, which required regular home maintenance. I am currently helping an elderly couple with weekly housekeeping support.

Painting! I have a bit of experience painting cabin exteriors, fences, and interior walls, and I’m comfortable with various art project mediums.

Animal care! I have a lot of love for animals, and have spent time caring for and exercising dogs and cats through various housesitting jobs (taking them on walks, feeding them, regularly clearing up after them, playing with them, administering oral medications, etc).

Cooking! I’ve been teaching myself to cook! For the last year and a half, I have been preparing the (mostly vegetarian) evening meals for my family, for a few days out of the week.
