  • Description

    Hello!

My name is Santiago, from Spain.

My dream is to have my own self sustainable homestead one day. During the last few years I have been working and helping in different farms in several countries to learn as much as i can about it.

This last year i have been working in a heritage farm and before that i was employed as the main hand in a buffalo ranch in British Columbia, Canada for almost 3 years. You can check below in my skill set section other things i have done for work.

I like to work and volunteer in different places to learn different approaches to farming and to meet like minded people.

Country life is my passion and my way of living, and i enjoy it even more if i am abroad and i meet people from all over the world.

  • Quelles sont vos compétences ?

I have a degree in forestry work and a also a university Bachelor's in fine arts.

Among other jobs i have been the foreman in a Bison Ranch in the Canadian Rockies.
Apart from the bison, in that place I have been raising chickens, pigs and rabbits.

Also recently i was employed in a heritage farm , restoring the old gardens, setting a pig field and taking care of the ancient buildings

During my travels before that I have been the main hand in an organic farm (troms area) for a year and a half: there we had horses, sheep, chickens, goats and a big garden. We also made our own hay and processed firewood and lumber from the property. I have worked and volunteered in other farms in Norway, France and Spain.

I don't conider myself expert at anything but i am very curious and willing to learn as much as possible. Because of that during these years I have been doing all sorts of jobs:

A lot of chainsaw work: firewood, pruning, forest fire prevention, logging, etc. (i have a full chainsaw license)

As a farm worker i had to learn how to build stuff and fix stuff. I have done a bit of everything around construction projects: from laying floors, framing and insulation, installing drywall, timber framing, roofing, traditional log building, adobe, strawbale building, etc. I have built cabins, sheds, corrals, firewood shacks...

I built my own cabin out of mud and logs and it kept me warm and snug through -25 C winters! I like to use natural or recycled materials for construction. I am a student in the art of turning junk and scraps into useful things.

I can weld some, have done some work with concrete and basic masonry, also painted a few murals. If you want to paint something on your barn i might be your guy.

I have set up irrigation systems, built and mended a bunch of fences, I am not shy when it is time for shovelling, digging, cleaning stables...just tell me what needs to be done and i will get to it.

I am into hunting for big and small game, I can slaughter and process animals for meat, tan their skins and make stuff out of them. I like tanning hides for craft projects. I have a deep respect and love for animals and i like to use every single part of them if i can.

I have some experience with horses: Working in different farms i have become a decent rider. Also in those places i learnt a bit about trimming and i have shoed some horses myself.

I like to work in different tasks and i consider myself an adaptable person, also i love to learn new skills. I can work in a team or in an autonomous way and keep myself busy.

I eat a lot! but i am not picky. I can make food but i would rather do dishes if i get to chose.

I appreciate structure and setting things very clear from the start at every job. During work time i give 100% of what i have and i don't play around. On the other hand I like to have my own time to focus on my personal projects, I have learnt with time that communication is key to find the right balance between work hours-free time in order to satisfy both parts.

Above all, let's get stuff done and have fun!
