  • Description

    Hi!

My name is Ruth Aaqqii. I was born in Germany in 1979, and am still a german citizen, but haven`t lived in Germany since 1999.

In my 20`s, I moved to Norway, following my passion for nature and outdoor life, and stayed there for 7 years.
Later, I settled down in a small community at the northeast coast of Greenland, where I`ve lived for the last 16 years, apart from a few months of travelling here and there.

It was my passion for snow, outdoor life, wilderness and sled dogs that brought me to Greenland.

This year, 2022, however, I decided to leave my home in Greenland for some time, to find out if I want to start a new life and eventually find a new home in a different country.

Currently, I´m travelling and visiting friends in Europe, mostly Scandinavia.

My interests are spending time in nature and all kinds of outdoor activities. I studied Outdoor Education and am an experiences Nature Guide.
Recently I fell in love with long-distance hiking, and competed my first long hike in 2021, hiking through Sweden, from Treriksröset to Smygehuk. I dream of doing other long hikes in the near future.

I also enjoy handspinning wool (in particular muskox-wool) and knitting. In Greenland I had my own (very) tiny business, offering dog-sledding experiences and selling handmade knitwork. Also, I worked as an organist at the local church.

Right now, I´d like to spend some time working in Sweden, to learn more about swedish culture, practice the language, and get a feel for if I´d like to move there permenantly.

Although I might be a lot older then most workaway helpers, I belive I am young at heart :-), easy going, relaxed, and ready to get my hands dirty with all kind of work. I like to be physical active, and am used to physical work (in Greenland, I lived in a house without running water, and always had 6-10 sled dogs to take care of).

I love to meet new people and to learn from others. Being a compentlative person, I also enjoy spending time alone, reading books and simple pleasures like a good cup of tea or coffe.

Animals have been an important part of my life for many years, and I still miss my team of Greenlandic sled dogs, that I had to sell, in order to leave Greenland.
I´d love to also learn more about taking care of other animals, - be it cows, goats, sheep, etc.!

Thanks for reading, and let me know if you have any questions!

I´m interested in learning to speak Swedish. I uderstand 90 % or so, but I can`t really speak it yet. Would be fun to get to dive into the language and pronounciation. I do understand Norwegian 100 %, but after many years of not speaking it, I speak a mix of danish and norwegian when interacting with Norwegians. German, English and Danish are the languages I am fluent in. Danish is what I use mostly, in everyday life. I also speak and understand East Greenlandic to some degree, but i am not fluent in it. Since it was not possible to choose "Greenlandic" on the languages ist, I chose "Inuktitut" but, that actually is another dialect of the Inuit language family. I have some experiences teaching languages, since I sometimes worked as a substitute teacher in Greenland. But not that much. I do love languages because they can open up new worlds! :-)

  • Quelles sont vos compétences ?

My educational background is office work (looong ago in Germany, but, well, I don`t mind doing some paperwork and work at a computer, once in a while), also, I have a Bachelor`s Degree in Outdoor Education and Circumpolar Studies, back from when I lived in Norway.

Knowledge about life in the Arctic and practical skills in outdoor activities - like sleeping and travelling through arctic wilderness in the freezing cold, guiding and taking care of customers in extreme environtments, also being a polar bear safety guard (polar bears live close to my home in Greenland).

I can hunt (for food) seals and musk-ox, mainly, in Greenland. Fishing mostly arctic char with nets and ice-fishing in winter, I´ve done often, ice-fishing is so much fun! :-) I can slaughter an animal, and fish of course, and prepare simple meals out of the game and fish I used to harvest. In Greenland we had very few souces of food, so I am best at making simple meals....

I have worked with many different things over the years - like working part-time as an organist for 16 years. I can play the piano and some viola.

I am a skilled nature / outdoor guide and musher (greenlandic style).

I once worked with cows on a summer farm in Norway, and loved that, and took care of some horses also for shorter periods of time (I never learned to ride horses, but would love to).

I`ve also worked with delivering mail, cleaning houses and other work at a guesthouse / hostel in Greenland.
And as a tour / travel guide for groups of tourists travelling at the west coast of Greenland.

I have been handspinning moskox-wool for almost 10 years, on drop-spindles and spinning-wheels, and also teached beginners how to handspin wool. To work with wool - spinning and knitting (icelandic sweaters) is a passion of mine, that I love to share.

In Greenland I sometimes looked after kids, had my friends and families kid`s visit and stay with me for days, and enjoyed that. But I have never worked with kids professionally. I have a step-daughter in Greenland, who is 18 years old now.

I have a drivers licese, from back in Germany. But, I have hardly driven a car (in traffic) for the last 16+ years - because there are no real roads and only a handfull of cars in the small community in Greenland, where I´ve lived for all those years.
I never owned a car there. My transportation was the dog-sled. :-)

In 2019 I drove around in a car in northern Iceland for a few days. It was fine on the country roads and very small towns. But driving into a bigger town, once, felt quite unsafe.

I would definelty need a lot of practic, if I had to drive a car in a city. On the country side - no problem! And I like to drive. :-)
