  • Description

Hi, my name’s Louis and I’m my gap year! I’ve completed a degree at the University of St Andrews, where I studied Ancient History and Archaeology. I’m originally from London, although I’m half French and spend half my time studying in Scotland. I plan to spend a year working and travelling around the world before entering the world of work. My goal is that by the end of the year, I will speak reasonable Italian and Spanish and be able to make myself understood in any Latin language country! I've just spent a very fulfilling couple of months in Italy, working for a couple of sustainable communities, and am currently searching for some interim work here in the Uk.

I’m a passionate mountaineer and regularly go hiking, camping and rock climbing in the Scottish Highlands. I have worked as a Hiking Instructor, as well as Counsellor and Lifeguard, in a Residential Camp for Kids in Maine, in the US. Last summer, I was part both of a meditation community in Piedmont, and helped out in a restoration project of an ancient Sicilian farming Villa. I’m also a regular meditator and enjoy keeping myself in shape, although I’d rather not do it in the gym! I’m well aware of the negative effects that omnipresent technology can have on my my life and the lives of others, and do my best to keep my distance from my phone as much as possible.

Finally, I am deeply concerned about the state of the climate crisis, and I’ve taken part in a significant amount of activism against the continued funding of the fossil fuel economy by the UK government. I hope to find a sustainable project to be a part of this summer, so that I can continue to feel as though I’m doing my bit towards this global issue.

  • Quelles sont vos compétences ?

I’m used to being and living outdoors, and quite happy to get my hands dirty! I’m also a competent Hiker/Camper, Rock Climber, Skier and Dinghy Sailor.

I’m a native English and French speaker with basic Spanish and reasonable Italian (as long as you speak slowly), and can pick up Latin languages relatively quickly.

By now, I’m a pretty practiced writer and researcher for my degree subject and have developed very good written communication skills.

I’ve worked two summers in the hospitality industry in both the front and back of house, including serving customers, handling money, shop admin and mentoring newer staff members. This has taught me how to be calm and resilient during the midday lunch rush!

I have spent a summer working as a Counsellor, Hiking Instructor and Lifeguard for a Bunk of 15 9 year old boys at Camp Cedar, a Residential Camp in Maine, USA. I had to adapt to a new (and surprisingly unfamiliar) country, keep up a friendly face for the kids, and do my job professionally and safely at the same time. I also received Lifeguarding and Wilderness First Aid qualifications from the American Red Cross as part of my training for the role!

I have done over ten years of piano, and achieved ABRSM Piano grade 6, and Music Theory grade 5.
