Description
I'm Michael (or Mike), a 28-year-old British/Irish backpacker originally from Manchester, England. I'm currently travelling Australia on a 417 Working Holiday visa until November 2026 (at least).
My academic background is in languages and translation, finishing my bachelor's in Modern Languages (Spanish, Dutch, German) in 2019 and a master's in Translation Studies in 2020, both at the University of Sheffield in the UK. I've been working in similar industries since then, most recently at Accenture in Dublin, Ireland and previously as a trainee translator at the European Parliament in Luxembourg.
I have done a fair amount of travelling whilst at work and university, such as semesters abroad in Spain and the Netherlands and working in Luxembourg and Ireland. So I've always had the bug for living abroad and wanted to spend a year backpacking in Australia while that's still possible for me.
I'm keen to meet as many great people as possible on the way and help out in any way I can!

My love of languages really can't be understated. I'm keen to learn about pretty much any language and would be confident in teaching Spanish, Dutch or German informally or formally. Though I don't possess any official qualifications in teaching, I spent a semester teaching the weekly intermediate level Dutch conversation class during my master's, so feel confident in teaching people about the languages I know, or just conversing casually. English is my native language and my Dutch and Spanish are between C1 and C2 level ( professional level), whereas my German is upper-intermediate (B2).
