Hello and welcome :)

My name is Maike, I'm in my mid-twenties and I’ve just completed my midwifery studies in Germany. From now on, I’m as free as a bird and planning to travel to the Americas in June — starting in Canada and continuing on to Central America. I'm really excited about the possibility of learning from different cultures, especially when it comes to birth practices from all around the world, but also just in general!

I’m interested in community life and can easily see myself living in a community in the future. I would love the opportunity to join and experience different communities, living and working together to learn from their ways of life.

I like gardening. I worked for nearly seven years in an organic nursery and at the market. I enjoy being outdoors and I am happy to get my hands dirty with whatever work needs to be done. I love hiking, swimming, and just spending time in nature, so I’m always up for outdoor activities.

I follow a vegan lifestyle, and I love cooking - especially when I can share the meal. I’m always excited to learn new recipes. I’m also comfortable managing household tasks and caring for animals and I see well what work needs to be done. I used to help organize summer camps for children and have been babysitting twins for almost two years.

I'm an empathetic person, and the well-being of those around me is important to me. However, I can also stand up for myself and communicate my boundaries. In general, open and honest communication is important to me! :)

I am politically engaged and often attend demonstrations—whether against climate change, the shift to the right, for healthcare reform, feminism, or as a queer ally.

Through Workaway, I hope to meet new people in different projects, exchange ideas, and immerse myself in different cultures and ways of life. I’m excited to take on new challenges, improve my skills, and offer my help wherever it’s needed. I'm looking forward to grow as a person and as a midwife :)

Quelles sont vos compétences ?

First, I’m very proactive and can often recognize what needs to be done on my own. I’m happy to help wherever it’s needed and don’t mind jumping into different tasks.

In the past, I’ve gained practical skills through a variety of jobs:
- I worked on an organic farm for seven years, helping both in the fields and selling products at a local farmers market.
- My second job was at a swimming school, where I taught 4-5-year-old children how to swim for two years. I really enjoyed working with the kids and helping them gain confidence in the water.
- I also volunteered as a camp organizer from age 16 to 20. My friends and I ran a two-week summer camp for 9-14-year-old girls, where we led activities like tinker, games in the woods, and campfire evenings. It was a lot of fun, and because we organized everything ourselves, I learned a lot about planning, organization, and managing a group of children.

And I really enjoy cooking!

One of my hobbies is photography, and I enjoy taking pictures. I’m planning to bring a good camera with me.

Lastly, I have no problem with tidying up and cleaning. I actually enjoy organizing and sorting things, so I’m happy to help with those kinds of tasks too.
