Description
Hey! We are Elija (they/them) and Ezra (they/them), a queer couple from Germany. We are university students who like to travel and explore the world. We just finished our Bachelor degrees and Elija is doing a Masters degree while Ezra studies to become a teacher.
Ezra has already worked abroad in different schools and kindergarten settings in Thailand and Italy, and Elija has spent a year as an au pair working in Ireland in two different families. Therefore, we already have quite some experience with kids of all ages, especially with teaching.
The last project we did via workaway was in a school in Colombia and we both loved it! Still miss the people we met there!

Ezra:
While I was in high school, I was able to gain many valuable experiences working as a tour guide in a museum as well as organizing and hosting workshops and summer camps about political, social, and sustainability themes. After finishing high school, I spent a year in Thailand, partly working as an English teacher, helping out in different communities, and taking part in a permaculture/sustainability project. Additionally, I spent some weeks in Italy working as a teacher in a bilingual kindergarten, teaching English and helping with exam prep for older students (Cambridge und TOEFL). I also worked as a teacher for German as a Foreign Language and English, and worked as a research assistant while studying for my Bachelor's degree. I speak multiple languages, play the piano, dance ballet, have some experiences with blogs and social media, and am a very social, extroverted person.

Elija:
When I was in grade 9/10 I gave extra lessons and volunteered to help the younger students with their homework as part of the homework supervision that my school offered. A year later I helped with child care on a ski vacation that was organized by the local parish that featured teaching skiing to the smaller kids in the morning and entertaining them in the evening. Since working with children brings me great joy I did a gap year as Au Pair after finishing school. In two different families, I managed everything that concerned both the children and the household. Therefore I am a well-organized person that still can be spontaneous. I especially liked cooking/baking and planning/doing activities with the children. While studying my Bachelor's degree I worked as a tutor and student assistant in the university's art collection.
Though I am an introverted person that doesn't like big gatherings, I enjoy interacting with people, especially once I can learn something from them.

Staying and working with at the place was easily one of the most amazing experiences! It is hard to put into words the love, appreciation, kindness, and inspiration we found working with Alejo, Arturo, the other volunteers and, of course, the kids.

I'm not quiet sure how to start describing my experience here, because even though it has been a couple of days since I said goodbye to my wonderful fellow teachers and volunteers and my cute but at times nerve wracking kids, I am not sure how to describe everything that has made my experience what it was. My time in Adria has taught me a lot of… read more valuable skills and life experiences that I am sure to use in upcoming workaway experiences. Not quiet knowing what to expect, I arrived in Adria on the 7th of January and within a few days, it felt like I had always been there. Elizabeth and all the other volunteers make you feel like you have always been part of the team and that the association is your home. The people in general were, I think, the highlight of this stay. The teachers are an amazing team that is always there for each other and sticks with you through all the highs and lows a stay abroad can bring. They become your family, the people you eat with, have movie nights with, and travel with. Adria is an amazing place to be staying, it's a cute little Italian city in Veneto, where people will soon know you as one of "Elizabeth's girls" and greet you on the streets. From there, you can easily go many places during your time off or the weekends, which is why in my relatively short time there, I still traveled a lot.
However, if you decide to take part in this workaway experience, your main focus should be to work and to engage in the association. This is the heart project of Elizabeth and she will expect you to not only regard it as a way to stay in Italy, but as a working position in which you make a difference and help the association to accomplish it's goals. Even as a volunteer, you are regarded as part of the team and once you are familiar with how everything works, you start taking on your own role as a teacher. During my time there, I started off assisting in Kindergarten, and finished teaching classes, being a substitute for the other teachers, conducting speaking exercises and many more different tasks. It certainly never gets boring and you will experience a wide range of tasks, that will sometimes challenge you, be help you get more experienced and flexible in your work. Still, my favorite part of work was definitely working in Angloteca, their kindergarten concept, where I took care of a bunch of wild Italian kids that were at the same time the most adorable beings on earth.
God, I feel like I am writing a novel, but there is just so much to say. Maybe to keep it short, here is what I would say to other possible new volunteer: Don't expect this to be chill or easy or a cheap way to travel Italy. It's not. It takes commitment, flexibility, lots of motivation and the will to learn how the association works. The work will sometimes be challenging, but in the end, it is all worth it. Elizabeth is an amazing, motherly host that will make sure that you are happy. Do not hesitate do speak up about something that bothers you, she will make sure to figure something out and help you solve whatever problem you might be having. The other teachers are like family that will make you feel welcome and loved, help you out whenever needed and go on trips with you if you want to. You will experience being a teacher, a friend, a traveler, a volunteer and a part of the team throughout you stay there and miss it the instant you leave. So if that sounds like something you might enjoy, I can highly recommend sending them an email!
So well, the only thing I can say is: Thank you, maybe we will meet again! :)
