Dear host/workawayer,

My name is Koen. I am 21 years old and applying for my second Workaway. I am from the Netherlands, grew up in Austria and study Management & Technology in Munich, Germany. Although the city is quite fun, I want to spend the spring holidays doing something new and different.

Growing up in Austria, mountains and nature were always around me. In summer, I go hiking with my family and friends. During winter, I go skiing or ski touring, depending on the snow and weather. Furthermore, I run, started bouldering, play golf and ice hockey. In short, I like being active and being outdoors.

In the summer of 2023, two friends and I travelled across Europe with Interrail. We were crazy enough to go from Bregenz, Austria, to Bergen and from there south to Istanbul. After Istanbul, we flew to Rome and travelled via Monaco and Bern back home. Although we spent several days on trains, the adventure was well worth it. We met new people, did a lot of sightseeing and enjoyed the local food. You could say we saw half of Europe.

I did my first Workaway in September 2024 in Telemark, Norway
(https://www.workaway.info/en/host/238148792725). I built a wooden viewing platform in the woods (see my photos). It took me three weeks to finish it. The build increased my carpentry skills, and it is nice to see that people enjoy and post photos of the platform on their social media feeds. Furthermore, I spent a lot of time exploring the area through hikes, canoeing on the fjords or cycling through the woods.

Finally, I would describe myself as hardworking, reliable and always eager to learn new things. When I am tired of sports, I like to be around my friends or read a book. I am fluent in German, Dutch and English. I can also speak a little French.

Quelles sont vos compétences ?

In August 2021, I worked in our local forest. We were maintaining the forest. We cleared things from footpaths and cycle paths. We cut wood into smaller pieces for customers to heat in the winter. Furthermore, we removed weeds around younger trees so that they grow better and do not die in the winter. It was a lot of fun. I learned new things and was outside all day.

In high school, I had the subject Mechanical Technology Metal. It was completely different from the usual theoretical curriculum. I learnt the basics of welding, pneumatics, milling and turning practically and theoretically. In addition to the curriculum, we also had internships at Liebherr and our local energy supplier, illwerke. At Liebherr, we learnt the basics of welding. At illwerke, we learnt milling and turning on a CAD machine.

I have some experience with carpentry. My dad has a holiday house for tourists to rent in a nearby village. There, we built a fence around the property. In my first Workaway, I built a viewing platform in the woods, see my photos.
