  • Description

Hello there, my name is Johnny, I am a traveling aspiring chef, artist and adventurer with a background in event production for artist and community. For the last couple years I have been traveling to places and cooking for different communities. At this moment, I am looking to expand and challenge myself and complete a book I have been writing. My ultimate goal is to create a sense of homeostasis as a person, to live fully, authentically and create the conditions to express myself however I see fit. In order to do that I feel its important to see the world and understand what is possible. Thanks for checking my profile, let me know if you have any questions!

UPDATE: April 2024 - My Artist Statement.

I am a nomadic artist, writer, and aspiring chef with a passion for blending food, culture, community, and art. My work in both for-profit and non-profit sectors has made me ask whose voices are amplified. I believe event production is about cultivating multi-sensory moments to share stories. We can shape our experiences and warp time by means of light, sound, scent, touch, smell. Curating full spectrum moments deepens my understanding of the world around me. My work is about whose voices get amplified and creating conditions to collectively seek joy. I do this in storytelling, cooking, event production, photography and writing.

I graduated from the Studio for Interrelated Media in 2012 where I discovered the power of technology to create beautiful, weird, unique, and sometimes hilarious moments. After graduating I was without a proper studio and needed a creative outlet. So, I started to dive into making my favorite meal, pho. This became a perfect way to curate a shared experience and cultivate moments of joy. Little did I know I was tapping into my roots and that it would spawn a series of pop-up dinner parties across North America, the middle of the Pacific Ocean, and Mexico for the next decade. Cooking became a spiritual practice connecting me with my ancestors and the people I cook for. I began to understand that I am a flame-keeper of my culture and traditions.

In 2020, Covid prompted me to embrace a life of travel and adventure, inspired by icons like Anthony Bourdain and the pages of National Geographic. I traversed the continental United States, immersing myself in the wilderness of Alaska, the aloha spirit of Hawaii, and the vibrancy of Mexico. I wanted to know what happens when dreams run wild, and I feel what happens when we choose love over work. I hope my decision to seek joy inspires people to ask how they can harness their talents at any point in time. That we may lead with open beating hearts and not chained by corporations and systems designed to silence souls and drown out dreams.

Currently I am pursuing my dream project: traversing two ancient trade routes to document my experiences with food, art, and culture. These routes—the Tea Horse Road from Northern Laos to Southern China and the Silk Road from China to Uzbekistan and beyond—are the epitome of East-meets-West encounters in history. As an Asian-American, I see myself as a modern physical embodiment of East-meets-West. I aim to explore the parallels of my personal history with these ancient trade routes, delving into my lineage and ancestry and celebrate the achievements of my forebears. I believe this story is also relevant to anyone disconnected to their ancestors and seeking communion with something deeper than a 30 second video on social media. My ultimate goal is to capture this experience in a comprehensive body of work that underscores the interconnections of food, family, culture, history, and mythology.

Thank you for taking the time to read my story and I hope we can find a way to work together to meet our mutual goals.
