  • Description

    On February 26, 2024, we (Gabbie and Alex) packed up our lives into a 2006 Toyota Matrix and set out to drive the longest road in the world—the Pan-American Highway. What began as a search for “what else is possible” beyond the rural and city lives we knew, quickly became a journey rooted in our desire to reconnect with the earth and give back to her, as she has given so much to us.

    As we traveled across Canada and the U.S. into Mexico and Guatemala, that longing for deeper connection shaped our path. In Guatemala, we volunteered on a cacao farm and regenerative center and were struck by how disconnected we’d become from the origins of our food. Eager to learn more, we volunteered on a regenerative farm in Belize.

    There, we discovered the true potential of regenerative agriculture—farming in harmony with nature. We worked the land by hand and horse, ran soil tests, built compost systems using effective microorganisms, and tended livestock including chickens, goats, rabbits, cows, ducks, and more. We harvested tropical fruit, planted crops, and supported a self-sustaining kitchen. Along with clearing dense jungle to expand the orchard.

    Here is where we fell in love with farming.

    From there we spent 7 months in Nicaragua volunteering on a 111-acre passionfruit farm, where we developed a bokashi composting system and applied the regenerative practices that we learned to maintain a thriving kitchen garden and manage five acres of jungle landscape.

    Most recently we have spent the last 7 months living and working on a coffee farm and homestead in Costa Rica.
    Here we:
    • Alex built a bokashi and vermicomposting system for a 5-acre coffee farm
    •Alex designed and built a home climbing gym
    •Gabbie designed, built, planted and now manages a 500 sq. ft. kitchen garden (tomatoes, cucumbers, watermelon, peppers, eggplant, beans, zucchini, herbs, greens, etc.)
    •Together we’ve been doing video production
    •Our next project is building a cob pizza oven

    After nearly two years on the road, we’re now heading back to Canada with the goal of working in Canadian farming whilst working towards our long-term goal of building our own regenerative farm.

    We’re hardworking, adaptable, and passionate about contributing meaningfully wherever we go. We love hands-on projects, learning new skills, and supporting farms and communities that are connected to the land.

    Was the kitchen manager for a cacao regenerative center, knowledgeable in sourdough, cheesemaking, vegetarian and meat cuisines, has cooked with Alex for groups of up to 15

    Communications:
    Written communication and storytelling experience writing feature articles for Halifax Magazine, essay-based creative non-fiction articles, natural and landscape film-photography portfolio creation, website development and over-all passion for the creative arts
    *Degree in International Development and Journalism from Dalhousie University

    Customer service:
    3 years experience as a server in the competitive and fast-paced Toronto restaurant industry

    Management/leadership skills:
    10+ years in childcare work as Camp Counsellor and Head of Swimming, Lifeguard and Swimming Instructor, and Production Coordinator for Clerisy Entertainment (documentary production company)

    Alex-
    Building Skills: Alex built a rocket stove, a home climbing gym, a vermicomposter system and has recently been tasked to build a cob pizza oven!

    Gardening:
    We both have volunteered on a cacao farm in Guatemala and a Regenerative farm in Belize, we have learnt how to establish and maintain a successful kitchen garden growing things like potatoes, cucumber, tomatoes, peppers. eggplant, cabbage, brussel sprouts etc. We have successfully created and utilize a bokashi composting system on the farm we are currently living at!
