    Description

Absolutely — Workaway likes things clear, honest, practical, but still warm. Here’s a Workaway-optimized version: a little less dreamy, a little more “this is what you’ll actually do,” while still keeping the magic of the place.

    🌲 About Our Place
We are a rustic mountain animal sanctuary in the Sierra Nevada foothills, focused on animal care, land stewardship, and slowly restoring and improving our property. This is a hands-on, real-life place where helpers become part of daily routines with animals, gardens, and outdoor projects.
We care for a unique group of animals, including:
    Ostrich
    Emus
    Peacocks
    Ducks and geese
    Chickens
    Pigs
    Dogs
    Cats
We also maintain gardens, tend trees and bushes, prune plants, improve animal areas, work on fences and trails, and keep the land healthy and functional.

    What You’ll Be Helping With

This is a an active place. Typical help includes:

Feeding and watering animals (morning & evening routines)
Cleaning pens, coops, and animal areas (including ostrich & emu areas)
Garden help: planting, weeding, watering, pruning bushes and garden plants
Tending trees, beds, and outdoor spaces
Helping care for dogs and cats and keeping shared spaces clean
The work is physical, practical, and meaningful. Some days are busy and active, others are lighter.

    🏔️ Living Here
You’ll be living in the mountains in a quiet, rural setting.
Conditions are rustic and seasonal (cold, snow, heat, mud, dust depending on time of year)
    Cell service is limited
You should be comfortable with simple living, animals, and outdoor work
In return, you get a peaceful place, good purpose, fresh air, and a chance to be part of something real and grounded.
👋 Who This Is Good For
    Great fit for:
Animal lovers (especially those excited about ostrich and emus)
People who like physical, outdoor work
    Gardeners, builders, and practical helpers
    Kind, responsible, self-motivated people
Not a good fit if you need luxury, nightlife, or reliable high-speed internet.
    ❤️ Our Approach
We value kindness, responsibility, respect for animals, and taking good care of the land and each other.

🌲 In Your Free Time / The Area
In your time off, you’ll be surrounded by some of the most beautiful nature in the Sierra Nevada foothills. The property itself is on a historic gold mine and has a pond, streams, and forest, and we’re close to lakes, rivers, and endless hiking and exploring.
You can spend your free time:
Swimming or relaxing by the pond or nearby rivers
Exploring forest trails, streams, and historic mining areas
Hiking, nature walking, bird watching, or just enjoying the quiet
Visiting nearby lakes, rivers, and mountain towns
Resting, reading, creating art, or enjoying the stars at night
This is a great place for people who love nature, water, history, and peaceful surroundings.
    Transportation:
We are in a rural mountain area, so having your own car is helpful but not always required. We can sometimes help with rides to town depending on schedules, and trips can be coordinated when possible.
This is a special place to unplug, recharge, and experience a truly unique part of Californi
