    Description

You’ll stay in a handcrafted beachfront treehouse with thousands of trees and crashing waves of the Pacific Ocean. Our place sits on 2 hectares of wild land with 185 meters of coastline, completely off-grid and powered by solar.

Nature here is next-level, especially in green season—long empty beach walks, tide pools, and river exploration are part of daily life. If you’re into surfing, music, writing, birdwatching, hiking, fishing, or simply being outdoors, this is your spot. It’s an easy place to unplug, slow down, and rewild yourself.

Projects include permaculture gardening, maintenance, carpentry, building stuff, odd jobs and . We’re easy going, love music and good food, and appreciate people who are kind, self-motivated, and curious.

Cambutal has a strong Santeño culture. Neighbors are friendly, speak Spanish and are always down for a chat.

A 4×4 is required to reach this kind of natural beauty. Expect solitude, tall trees, rivers, waterfalls, and long stretches of coastline where you won’t see another person. In rainy season, the Horcones River can be impassable at times. If you enjoy quiet time, doing your own thing, and being surrounded by raw, real nature, you’ll thrive here. We’re easygoing, love music and good food, and appreciate people who are kind, curious, and self-motivated.

Zephyr’s Treehouse is a private, off-grid cabin perched on a jungle rise with panoramic ocean and jungle views. The sleeping space is a 24 ft x 12 ft open room with two beds (set up as one king or two twins), soft organic linens, mosquito nets, Wi-Fi, and sliding glass doors that let in ocean breeze and sunrise light. There’s a small kitchen with a full-size fridge and a covered walkway to a private garden-style shower and toilet.

The treehouse sits away from the main house—you’ll cross a scenic footbridge and follow a path under huge trees and tropical plants to reach it. Rocking chairs on the shady deck overlook the surf, and you can't get any more beachfront.

We’ve spent years building this place from scratch, and a lot of the magic here exists thanks to Workawayers who showed up ready to help, learn, and get creative.

    Sustainable + Eco Projects
-Alvaro built our breezy surf-view home and then the treehouse, using lightweight design, local materials, and as little concrete as possible.
-We’re completely off-grid. Alvaro installed all our solar panels, marine-grade inverter, charge controller, batteries, and home electrical system. This past year we added a 16-panel setup and a “PowerHouse” to hold everything.
-For our first 10 years, we ran entirely on rainwater. Our “WaterFarm” captured and stored enough to last all year. Now we also have a well—so the garden got extra lush.
-We got deep into Bill Mollison’s permaculture books and planted fruit trees, made compost, built nutrient-rich swales, and tried to live as sustainably as possible. Last year I had the wild idea of planting 1,000 trees and flowers… and we made it happen (thanks, Workaway!).
-We built a beautiful wooden bridge across a ravine to reach our biggest trees and the wildest part of our land. This is where the treehouse sits amongst the tree canopy.

    Last Year’s Projects
    -Carpentry (so much carpentry!)
-Solar upgrades + wiring the new system
-Windows and doors for the treehouse
    -Al’s new workshop
    -The “Bezerker!”
-Large-scale sewing project for roll-down curtains
    -Permaculture fun
    -Painting + installing siding

We’re endlessly grateful for everyone who has helped us build this place. Thank you for the creativity, skills, and good vibes.
