Description
Hello Workaway Friends!
(Please read to the bottom for instructions on how best to reach out!)
We've had such an amazing time hosting you all! Since 2016, we've hosted nearly 40 people from 13 countries. We spent the 2015-2023 living near Washington, DC, but big life changes brought us to a beautiful, secluded 40 acres on a lake in Florida.
As a family, we've spent the last 25 years living in every corner of the US - Florida, California, US Virgin Islands, Oregon, Georgia, and Virginia - and traveled to nearly all 50 states. I am a teacher of myriad things, inventive and resourceful, and was a swim and triathlon coach in DC. I am currently going back to school to become a Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist. My husband recently retired from 20 years with the US Coast Guard, and spends his days training and racing triathlons. My son is 17, adventurous, and loves climbing, mountain biking, and all things BIKE. My youngest is 13 and is our artist, swimmer, game player, and reader. We are open and welcoming to all humans. We are non-smokers, non-religious, and eat a varied, whole-foods, omnivorous diet.
In January of 2023, we left DC and spent three months camping on our lake and six months on the road. From April to October, we drove 22,108 miles from Key West Florida to Fairbanks Alaska and back again. We hit 31 states and provinces and 13 national parks.
In 2024, we built our dream home and we are ready to host workaway again! For you we have a large canvas tent with a GREAT view! You also have an outdoor shower and composting toilet, but access to the house shower/restroom as well. Your tent site also includes a small deck and outdoor kitchen area.
If you join us, you will often find us working on the land or projects around the house. We are interested in planting a wild flower garden (which failed last year due to drought) and reintroducing native fruit-bearing trees and locally adapted cultivars. Other skills we have include: native plant identification and wild edibles, building projects, trail construction, permaculture and native ecosystem restoration, invasive plant management, on-site lumber milling, forestry management, and more.
Again, we welcome you as family and hope to get to know you, spend time with you, and enjoy the cultural exchange!

Fall 2025 update! We are currently accepting travelers in the upcoming winter months. Please note, our expectation is that you come and stay as friends. When we stay with friends, we always provide our own groceries and we share kitchen duties, like cooking and dishes, just like you would at home. Work is never a requirement, but please understand, we open our home to you as family and expect the same in return. If you come visit us, you're never required to stay a certain length of time nor are we obligated to host you beyond what is comfortable and sensible for our family.
We've been hosting for years and have excellent ratings. I do my best to reply 100 percent of the time, but my response time may not always be immediate. We get LOTS of requests, so please answer these questions when you reach out. It helps me determine who is a good fit with our family and may get you a faster reply.
In the body of your email, please tell me:
1. Your name, age, and country of residency.
2. The specific dates you would like to come, how long you'd like to stay, and how flexible you are.
3. Your skills and interests.
4. Your travel/volunteer/camping experience.
5. A bit about your job or studies in "real life".
6. Why you want to Workaway!?

Autres infos...
Our property here is very rural, but we are often in town, at the beach, or off finding adventure somewhere. Public transit is extremely limited. Having your own car while you are here is beneficial, but it depends on what kind of experience you are looking for (for example - homestay/camping vs sightseeing).
