    Description

Hello traveler! I am Debra a host and workawayer. Please read AND RESPOND to the entire profile, it's a communication thing; if you don't I'm probably not going to reply. Please don't send a canned response - they're really easy to spot and do nothing to help me determine if you'd be a good fit.

I am looking for help with day to day upkeep of the home and some specific projects. Anyone with actual masonry skills, and/or actual construction experience (from rehabbing a barn to replacing a door) would be most welcome! For those more inclined towards tech projects I am developing a new small pet service and could use some help with a few computer related projects. I also am looking for someone to help around the house with general day-to-day things like cooking, cleaning, and organizing. So, if you like what you've read so far keep reading and drop me a line, I'd love to meet you!

This is a non-smoking (of anything) on the property - severe allergies.

We are in the Mt. Helix area of San Diego County. There is no nearby public transit so to go places a car would be needed if you want the maximum flexibility. Uber and Lyft are options, and I can can take you to the trolley station.

Of note, I have also been a workawayer and have traveled a fair bit. I love the couchsurfing idea and BnB. This is the workaway platform so there is the expectation of a work and cultural exchange.

Here you will gain English language practice and stay in a comfortable Southern California home setting - not lavish and not poor. You will experience what life is like in this part of the country with our warm weather, beautiful sunshine, and lovely outdoor opportunities. If you have an interest in learning about gardening: planting, trimming, or landscape design I can teach you some basics.

If you are interested in rabbits or horses there are opportunities to learn about, and work with them. I would love to help you with your English language and I hope you will teach me some of your language too. The evenings tend to be quiet, watching TV, reading, or spending time with the animals. On the weekends there are options for some fun activities that you are welcome to come along. Do you like board games? Attending a comedy show, concert, or planetarium showing? Some volunteer time may be spent helping at a horse show – if you are interested. This does not involve direct work with horses. It is unlikely that you will have the opportunity to ride unless you book a horseback riding session and I can help arrange that option.

If you enjoy the outdoor there are many hiking options to see the native flora and fauna including mountains, deserts, and the ocean which are all within an hour or two. Do you like motorcycle riding? There are many wonderful roads in San Diego county and motorcycle rentals are available.

In this home there is one friendly indoor cat (KC Squeaks) and and a very active 25# dog (Hugo, a blue heeler mix.) You may at times be helping to feed, clean, or care for the animals but you will not be primarily responsible for them. Hugo is 6 years old, very active, loves to play fetch, and barks...sometimes a lot. Two indoor bunnies and a pony round out the fur family. There are also at times additional animals being fostered.

Must like animals: especially cats and dogs. Unlike some cats mine is friendly and will seek you out for attention. If you have allergies this is not a good fit. Besides the pet hair, we also have pollen at certain times of year, and hay.

Individuals that are able to take initiative and follow-through with tasks are welcome; attention to detail and confidence to ask clarifying questions is needed. Individuals that are very "type-A" extra high energy, very loud or very animated will not be a good fit as the animals are sensitive. If you get along well with cats you will probably be fine.

I am especially interested in hosting individuals that have actual construction/masonry experience. I love working side-by-side with skilled individuals that are willing to share their skill set. I really want to explore masonry. Please be sure to describe-in detail-what you have done, projects you have worked on, skills you have, tools you work with. There are numerous small and large projects to be completed here ranging from rehabilitating a barn, cleaning and fixing up a travel trailer, painting doors and window trim, removing old irrigation system/pipes, trimming, weeding, and general yard clean up.

Inside the home there is house cleaning, cooking, computer-related work.

If you know how to sew that would be awesome. I have some horse clothing that need mending and some ideas to create items to help my pony be comfortable.

Ideally we would like someone that's really interested in longer stay.

You are vaccinated against COVID-19 and can provide proof. You are open to different lifestyles, ways of thinking, and have an open mind.

There is a travel trailer on the property. It is fully contained and basic. For greatest privacy this option is for you. Inside the home the option is a basic room with bed and bathroom in the hallway.

Breakfast is mainly cereal, yogurt, nuts/cheese, and sometimes eggs or pancakes. I do not eat meat (only occasionally some fish) so no meat will be served. Lunches are usually salads or sandwiches and there are always various snacks/fruit available. Depending on your plans and my schedule we can cook dinners together. If you like to cook I am very happy to hand over the kitchen to you! I love to learn about cooking different types of vegetarian and vegan foods.

We have farmers markets where fresh food is available and a variety of stores; fear not that you will be eating instant freeze dried Ramen noodles and peanut butter sandwiches during your stay here.

You should be an independent soul that does not require too much supervision. I often do quiet indoor work in the mornings and outdoor work in the afternoon. There is much to do and many options will be provided to give you flexibility. I am not a morning person, although I am up and about I like my mornings quiet.

We will share some meals together and practice language together if desired. If you are here for a longer stay, you will have more opportunities to go places with me. These may include hiking or trail riding, visiting animal sanctuaries or horse shows, or going to the beach.

Let me know about the things that interest you most about visiting San Diego. What are your “must see/do” interests? There are local sights that I would love to show you, but I can better host you if I know about your interests.

No smokers or party types please, be honest, it will not be tolerated.

The animals are our family and must be treated with care and kindness always this includes not letting them run out of doors unexpectedly.

Public transportation is not readily accessible; I am happy to take you to the trolley station

There are many options for things to do during time off, having a car in Southern California is common but Uber and Lyft are available and not too expensive. I am able to take you on a couple outings, depending how long you stay.

If you enjoy cycling the area is somewhat hilly and you should be in good physical fitness to enjoy bike riding. Motorcycling is very popular in the area with many excellent roads, rentals are available in the region, for example

There are many sight seeing options available in San Diego. The zoo, Balboa Park, San Diego Harbor - Star of India, Midway Museum, and Sea World Park. Of course the beaches are lovely. A bit north is the Temecula wine country. Locally, Mount Helix Park is a must see for 360 degree views of the region. I look forward to hearing from you!
