Nelson Island is a magical place, and it becomes even more enchanting when you have the opportunity to stay there with Glyn and Margaret on their stunning property with an extraordinary wooden house. … read more so much on the island and even on the sea, thanks to the kayaks and paddleboards they kindly allowed us to use.
Glyn is an excellent work manager who never asked for more than 5 hours of work per day. The projects we worked on were always enjoyable, and after work, Margaret would prepare dishes that were not only incredibly delicious but also served in generous portions. Being on Nelson Island was undoubtedly one of the highlights of our trip to Canada!

Marco and I had our first workaway experience with Glyn and Marguerite in May 2023 for 2 weeks. Marguerite contacted us beforehand and asked us if we would like to help them with some projects. At first we were a bit skeptical because of the island, which seemed to be isolated from civilization. But guys, if Marguerite should also write to you and
… read more you could arrange a stay with them, then you definitely have to do it. It was a once in a lifetime experience that we got to have. Glyn and Marguerite are really great hosts. They provided us with great food in the morning, noon and for dinner and always provided entertainment after work when requested. There are so many great things to do on the island from hiking, to swimming, kayaking and much more. Also in our second accommodation (Sunshine Coast, Madeira Park) we slept in a (I mean that seriously) luxurious trailer. Again we were wonderfully taken care of, this time also by the daughter Emily, who also drove us to different beaches after work. If the work was a bit exhausting on one or the other day, Glyn and Marguerite made sure that we did some lighter work afterwards. For my birthday I got a surprise cake, which is not a matter of course and something I would not have expected. It was almost a family relationship. All in all, it was a really great experience and we recommend this host 100%. Big thumb up for this workaway experience! We enjoyed our stay with Glyn and Maguerite in June 2019 and came back a second time in August 2019. We appreciated the cultural exchange, Glyn and Maguerite told us a lot about Canada but also Europe and the US. We had plenty to eat and Glyn and Marguerite bought us the food we like at the supermarket.
… read more If you are lucky enough, Glyn will cook his special Turbo Charged Chilli Chicken!!! The work was easy, we did fence building, fence painting and gardening. We also built a pizza oven on Nelson Island. The evenings by the fire eating Smoores and the fishing day with Neil and Jacky are great memories. We definitely recommend this place. We stayed at Glyn and Marguerite's place for 10 days and enjoyed it very much. Unfortunately, Marguerite couldn't join us due to unforeseen circumstances but Glyn definitely proved himself an impeccable host. He gave us a tour of the property on day 1 and provided us with a map of the island on which he showed us some good hikes. When we went on
… read more hikes, he made sure we took bear spray and an airhorn so we were safe :) He takes real good care of his Workawayers! And of course, he spoiled us with delicious meals and snacks, an added bonus! Further, Glyn's an interesting person to talk to, very approachable and if you're open to it, can teach you a thing or two about life. Thank you for that Glyn!
The property you'll stay at is just gorgeous. Because we were alone with Glyn, we could sleep in one of the bedrooms in the main house and that was very comfortable. However, if there are more people, you'll get a cabin all to yourselves, which is just as nice. It's all very convenient! At the house, they've got everything you need to enjoy yourself: books, good food, kayaks, paddleboards, hulahoops, games,... Plus there are plenty of hiking trails to explore! So expect to do mostly these things as there are no shops, restaurants,... on the island. We enjoyed ourselves just fine as it is a very pristine environment and we could've easily stayed a lot longer.
By the way, before Glyn takes you to the island on his boat (which is super cool) he'll go to the supermarket to make sure you have everything you need. In the middle of our stay, he took us to the supermarket again to buy some extra supplies.
The work itself was varied and wasn't too hard. We worked in the mornings and were free after lunch.

We absolutely loved having Dina and Sam stay with us for 9 days. They are both excellent workers and are not afraid of learning new tasks. We stayed 8 days with Glynn and Marguerite and had an amazing time. They are both very welcoming and caring. The mornings was sometimes hard work (good exercise though ;) ), but the afternoons really made up for it. We went kayaking, paddle boarding, hiking, canoeing, … and had a relaxing hot tub in the evening.

I really enjoyed my stay of 2 weeks on Nelson Island. The place is wild and beautiful. I mostly stacked some wood and did general maintenance while working hours. After that, I could go kayaking or paddling around the island and even enjoy the hotub ! The family is very kind and we spent a really good time together !
