    Description

    Hi!

We’re a family of four living just outside Tortosa, in southern Catalonia. My husband is a retired teacher of Spanish for foreigners, and I’m a secondary school teacher. We have two daughters, aged 17 and 15.

    About us

We are originally from Spain but spent many years living in Amsterdam, where our daughters were born. In 2013 we moved south to Guadix (Granada), and in 2018 to Tortosa, Tarragona. Moving around has always been part of our lives, and in 2020 we fell in love with an old masia (traditional Catalan farmhouse). We’ve been restoring it slowly with love and care, and finally moved in during the summer of 2024.

We love nature, animals, and spending time outdoors, walking, cycling, or just enjoying the peace and quiet. Music is also a big part of our family: when we travel, the saxophone and violin always come with us. and if we could, we’d bring the piano too! ;-) We enjoy reading, and our daughters love drawing, painting, dancing, and crochet. We also love spending time in the Netherlands, visit friends and family there, and stay connected to Dutch language and culture.

    Why Workaway?

Although we’re new to Workaway (so far we've honly hosted one workawayer family), the spirit of sharing and community has always been part of our lives. We’ve shared homes, cars, and time with people from many backgrounds. We love the idea of slow living, exchanging knowledge, and learning from others. As a multilingual household, we enjoy every opportunity to practice and share languages.

About the place & the help needed

Our farm is still a work in progress. We have restored our home, but there are still other buildings on the property waiting to be renovated. That is why we occasionally need an extra set of hands. We usually need help with:

    - Gardening / orchard. We are very new to gardening and could really use help from someone with experience: growing vegetables, choosing and planting bushes, creating a visual boundary around the property, mowing...

    - Pet and animal care. We have two cats, Pingu and Pancho would love to have someone here to take care of them when we’re away. We’re also planning to have goats and chickens soon, so any help with feeding and tending to them will be welcome.

    - (Light) building and DIY tasks. From time to time, we need help with projects such as drywall work or building a henhouse.

    - Keeping the house clean and tidy, occasional cooking.

The tasks will vary depending on the season and the progress on the renovation, but we’ll always communicate clearly and plan together.

    Location

Our home is surrounded by nature but still close to town. It's just a 20-minute walk from the centre of Tortosa. It’s a peaceful place with lots of space and views.

We’re close to the Ebro River, the cycling lane for the Via Verda starts just a few meters from our home, and we're between the Parc Natural del Delta de l’Ebre (coast) and the Parc Natural dels Ports (mountain). Perfect for walking, cycling, hiking, birdwatching..

If you enjoy animals, slow living, and having time and space to yourself, you might really like it here.

We look forward to welcoming you!

    Ideally, we'd like to host:

    - two people who are already travelling together, either as a couple or simply as friends, or
    - a family.

While we are at home: help with (small) projects depending on your skills / time of the year / stage in our renovation: clearing out, cleaning and preparing spaces, starting a small vegetable garden, drywall, mowing, keeping the house clean & tidy, Maybe language exchange?

While we are away, we'd like you to take care of the following tasks. They are quite simple and don’t take much time, but they’re important to us.

    - House-sitting: keep the house lived-in and cared for, water the plants
    - Take care of our cats, Pingu and Pancho. They are friendly, spend most of the day outside, but sleep inside
    - Watering the garden. Depending on when you're here there may be other small things to help with (like weeding)

Depending on your skills and experience, you can keep our DIY projects or light building projects going,

If you're a solo traveller and we're at home wen you come, you can also stay in hour guestroom in our masia. If you're a family or pair or friends you can stay in an apartment we have in the centre of Tortosa. But while we're away, the masia is all yours!

Our masia was originally built in 1900, and we’ve kept many of its original details like the colorful hydraulic tile floors and traditional staircase. At the same time, we’ve made it comfortable and eco-friendly with solar panels, rainwater collection, high-efficiency windows, and good insulation.

    Ground floor:
    - A large porch, sunny in winter and shady in summer, with a fireplace/barbecue.
    - Kitchen, dining area, and a cozy sofa space, plus a pantry. We have Google TV with tons of channels and movies to enjoy at any time.
    - A guest bathroom, and guest-room.

    First floor
    - Two bathrooms with showers.
    - One master bedroom.
    - Two single bedrooms.
    - Two studies.
    - Piano room
    - A terrace with a laundry room.

If you're travelling with a van or camper, there's enough space on our property for you to park it.

You can use our bikes (2 adult, 2 children).
