Description
We, my partner Ina and I, live with our 10 donkeys on the smallest of the Canary Islands, El Hierro. The maintenance and care of the donkeys and their grazing areas mean an enormous time, physical and financial effort. Therefore we are grateful for any help. El Hierro offers little in the way of cultural performances. The island is suitable for people who want to enjoy the unique nature of a small Atlantic island. There are a few tourist offers for hiking, cycling, swimming, diving, paragliding etc. Our donkeys belong to the endemic breed of Burros Majoreros. These donkeys of the Canary Islands are highly endangered. There are only about 200-300 of them left in total. That's why we keep and breed the donkeys.
Wir, meine Partnerin Ina und ich, leben mit unseren 10 Eseln, auf der kleinsten Kanareninsel El Hierro. Der Unterhalt und die Pflege der Esel und ihrer Weideflächen bedeuten einen gewaltigen zeitlichen, körperlichen, wie auch finanziellen Aufwand. Deshalb sind wir über jede Hilfe dankbar. El Hierro bietet wenig an kulturellen Darbietungen. Die Insel eignet sich für Leute die die einzigartige Natur einer kleinen Atlantikinsel geniessen möchten. Es gibt ein paar wenige touristische Angebote, fürs Wandern, Radfahren, Schwimmen, Tauchen, Paragleiten etc.
Unsere Esel gehören zu der endemischen Rasse der Burros Majoreros. Diese Esel der kanarischen Inseln sind stark vom Aussterben bedroht. Es gibt insgesamt nur noch etwa 200-300 von ihnen. Deshalb halten und züchten wir die Esel.

With our donkeys you have the opportunity to learn a lot about these animals and their behavior every day. Donkeys are very special animals and apart from the four hooves they don't have much in common with horses. Donkeys are extremely intelligent, charming and funny. But they are also powerful and defensive and do not let everything be done to them. That is why they were characterized by stupid people as stupid donkeys. As is so often the case, the idiot is at the other end of the line. With us you will learn how to handle stallions, mares and foals.

Esel sind sehr spezielle Tiere und haben ausser den vier Hufen, mit Pferden nicht viel gemeinsam. Esel sind äusserst intelligent, charmant und witzig. Sie sind aber auch kraftvoll und wehrhaft und lassen nicht alles mit sich machen.
Deshalb wurden sie von Dummen Menschen als Dumme Esel charakterisiert. Wie so oft, ist hier der Idiot am anderen Ende der Leine zu finden. Du lernst bei uns den Umgang mit Hengsten, Stuten und Fohlen.

You work 5 days a week. You have 2 days at your leisure. We will provide you with accommodation and food for this. The working time is 5 hours per day. Depending on the weather, the time of year and the urgency of the work to be performed, working hours and days off must be adjusted. The next day's work is always discussed the day before, but can change at short notice depending on the circumstances. The work consists of; Employment with the donkeys. Their coat and hoof care. If the weather permits, short walks with the donkeys in the vicinity. Collect donkey shit, clean troughs and fill with water. Feed the donkeys. Care and maintenance of the infrastructure and the donkey fincas cut feed. Depending on the season, remove weeds. Prune trees and bushes. Cut free the vegetation along the electric fence. Removing stones to make the donkey trails safer for us and the donkeys. Assisting in building and maintaining the infrastructure (shelters, stables, fences, stone walls) Assisting in tending and maintaining the orchard and vegetable garden.
Du arbeitest 5 Tage die Woche. Dir bleiben 2 Tage zu deiner freien Verfügung. Dafür bekommst du von uns Unterkunft und Verpflegung gestellt. Die Arbeitsdauer beträgt 5 Stunden pro Tag. Je nach Wetterlage, Jahreszeit und Dringlichkeit der zu verrichtenden Arbeiten, müssen Arbeitszeit und Freitage angepasst werden. Die Arbeit des nächsten Tages wird immer am Vortag besprochen, kann sich aber Umständen entsprechend, kurzfristig ändern. Die Arbeit besteht aus;
Beschäftigung mit den Eseln. Deren Fell und Hufpflege. Wenn es das Wetter zulässt, kleine Spaziergänge mit den Eseln in der näheren Umgebung. Eselscheisse sammeln, Tränken säubern und mit Wasser füllen. Die Esel mit Futter versorgen. Pflege und Unterhalt der Infrastruktur und der Eselfincas Futter schneiden. Je nach Jahreszeit, Unkraut entfernen. Bäume und Buschwerk stutzen. Entlang des Elektrozauns den Bewuchs freischneiden.
Entfernen von Steinen, um die Eselpfade für uns und die Esel sicherer zu machen. Mithilfe bei Bau und Unterhalt der Infrastruktur (Unterstände, Ställe, Zäune, Steinmauern) Mithilfe bei Pflege und Unterhalt im Obst und Gemüsegarten.

The accommodation is very basic and consists of a small cottage (see photos) about 50 meters from the main house where we, the hosts, live. There is a solar shower with toilet. An outdoor cooking facility. You usually cook your own meals. We will provide the necessary groceries. You have to buy alcohol and sweets yourself. We would be happy to invite you to an after-work beer in one of our village pubs. This gives you the opportunity to get in touch with the local population. The weather can change at any time of the year. Hot, cool, humid, windy. Everything is possible. It can change daily or stay that way for weeks, the weather on the small Atlantic islands is unpredictable. You just have to be prepared and equipped for anything.
Die Unterkunft ist sehr einfach und besteht aus einer kleinen Hütte (siehe Fotos), etwa 50 Meter vom Haupthaus entfernt, wo wir, die Gastgeber wohnen. Es gibt eine Solardusche mit WC. Eine Kochgelegenheit im Freien. Du kochst deine Mahlzeiten normalerweise selber. Die dazu nötigen Lebensmittel werden von uns gestellt. Alkohol und Süssigkeiten musst du dir schon selber kaufen. Gerne laden wir dich aber auf ein Feierabendbier in unsere Dorfkneipen ein. So hast du Gelegenheit in Kontakt mit der einheimischen Bevölkerung zu kommen. Zu jeder Jahreszeit kann das Wetter wechseln. Heiss, kühl, feucht, windig. Alles ist möglich. Dass kann sich täglich ändern oder wochenlang so bleiben, das Wetter auf den kleinen Atlantikinseln ist unberechenbar. Du musst einfach auf alles gefasst und ausgerüstet sein.

You at least have experience with horses or ponies, know how to handle them. Then you will learn a lot about donkeys with us. You're weatherproof, you don't need a lot of luxury around you. Geniesst die vielfach einsame Landschaft, den Sternenhimmel und den Blick auf den unendlichen Ozean. Du kannst auch mal für dich alleine sein. Bei einer Aufenthaltsdauer von 2-4 Wochen.
