Awake, In The Way, Together
Mission: In community, we curate transformational encounters with nature for the whole person at all phases of life
Our endeavor is to create a non-profit social enterprise co-living experience focused on providing sustainable end of life care in a beautiful forested setting, especially for those struggling to afford that care. The canvas for this work is a 40-acre homestead located about 90 minutes from Portland OR in the beautiful Columbia Gorge. More precisely, we are located just outside the town of Klickitat, WA in scenic Swale Canyon. We back to hundreds of acres of state and tribal forestlands, creating a peaceful and beautiful setting in which to invite others for educational experiences in permaculture and agroforestry or personal contemplation or end-of-life living. We have worked hard to prepare the property so that others can join us to collaborate in shared mission.
Our focus on the property revolves around three primary areas:
Hospitality: We believe that PLACE is sacred and should be shared with others.
Homesteading: Our goal is to produce as many of the resources that we us on the property for the property. We also strive to support others in that endeavor by providing classes and hands on internships.
Hospice: Living well includes dying well. Your final days or weeks or years should be on your terms. We would like to offer those nearing the end of their lives the opportunity to live and be cared for in this beautiful setting in the forest with access to the farm, to the wilderness, to community.
We plan to implement a community caregiving model where all of us are trained caregivers as well as farmers, homesteaders, construction workers, goat milkers, etc. Using this model we believe can provide excellent care because it supports the caregivers in having comprehensive and ever-changing experiences on the property which lends itself to mindful invigorated caregivers who are sustained and inspired by this work.

Learn the skills of a homestead. Build confidence in new ways of being/doing that you can bring home and incorporate into your life. Stay here for a while and get to know the small community around us.
We have so many ways you can join us. We want to support your journey and skills in an area that gives you life. Bring your whole self...whatever/whoever that is and you will find a place here. We expect that Workaways' will be involved in many different projects around the property. Being here is less about the work and more about finding yourself in the place...workaway with us is just part of the experience. Really everything we do here is about curating the environment to make it more sustainable and more accessible.
Come support our nonproft projects:
Communications: Help us develop our online and offline presence.
Sacred Art: We dream of having art strategically located throughout the property and artists to make this happen.
Alternative Energy: As an off-grid property we have a steady stream of solar and hydro projects underway at any time.
Soil Development: Innovation to add macro and micronutrients to the growing areas.
Forest Farming: Helping on almost 20 acres to establish forest-based farming practices.
Irrigation and Pond works: This area gets about 20 inches of rain per year so effective water management and storage are essential.
Animals: Currently supporting a small group of animals. We are exploring best practices for raising animals on this farm.
Trail Development: We are striving to create disabled access trails throughout the property so that people of all abilities can enjoy the beauty here.
Ecological Riparian Restoration: The property supports 1500ft of stream and we are working with the conservation district to improve water quality and fish habitat on these streams.
Forest understory management: We are supporting forest fire management by creating a healthier forest here, clearing dead or dense understory. We are excited for the long-term benefits of a healthy forest.
Winter/Spring accommodations (November-March) are in our guest cabin or in our vintage remodeled trailer. Summer accommodations are in tents or small cabins. We hope to share some meals either at our house or at the guest cabin. We will provide all the food staples as well as $25 per week for additional needs.
We want to provide plenty of time for you to explore one of the most beautiful areas. Whether you wan to visit Portland, explore the gorge, hike the mountains or even go visit the Pacific Ocean we want to make that happen. Car pooling with us will always be an option as we travel frequently.
