    Description

I have recently taken over an established, off-grid, remote-like homestead that's part of a land co-op of 200+ stunning acres in the Slocan Valley, southeastern British Columbia.  Situated in a mountain valley near Valhalla Provincial Park, there are endless outdoor opportunities and lake/river adventures.  I am looking forward to sharing our tranquil and independent lifestyle in exchange for working on projects at our home. I (Lisa) live here with my 2 children, Koda (10) and Django (8) who are here half time.

We wish for our visitors to experience the possibilities of retreat and independent living in connection with the land. The Slocan Valley is home to a diverse community of independently-minded perspectives with a strong history of self-reliance. People are open-minded and accepting.

  • Aide

    Aide

There is a wide variety of help that would be welcomed here, depending on what needs to be done, the momentum of the season, experience and interest of travellers. There are several carpentry, plumbing and electrical projects I hope to embark upon, in addition to the general maintenance needed. In the spring we will get deep into the established, production garden and begin connecting and enhancing garden and home with permaculture techniques. I also need help with video production.

This place offers a beautiful, remote location that feels very remote but is actually about a 12 minute drive to the village of Slocan. The access is a well-maintained forest service road to our long community driveway (in the winter at least an all wheel drive vehicle is needed). The cabin is nestled in the woods on the edge of the meadow. There is a loft bedroom, a woodstove, a propane stovetop and wifi. There is an attached, small building that serves as an outhouse. We currently use the bucket system for composting humanure, you will be responsible for your own composting and I will show you how. There is very limited power that we share, enough to power some lights and devices but not enough for a toaster. There is an insulated box that serves as a 'cool box' in the small creek nearby. Our home yurts are located nearby but the spaces are relatively private.

You will be independent in the cabin, responsible for your own food and meals. We will join together to share in meals on occasion.

This valley is surrounded by accessible mountains, lakes, creeks and hotsprings for day and overnight excursions.  Slocan Lake and the mouth of the Slocan River is a 12 minute drive from here. There is an old rail line converted to a recreational trail that runs alongside the full length of the Slocan River in the valley bottom. Little Slocan Lakes are not far away in the other direction.

Kootenay rideshare is a great way to get here from afar. If I can I will pick up from drop off points and for Mountain Man Mike's bus service. There is a public bus that goes up and down the Slocan Valley and to Nelson and Castlegar.
Hitching is a also a way to get up and down the valley but arrangements will need to be made for transport to the homesite from Slocan.

The remote location is an ideal retreat while still providing steady, shared internet. I have not shared internet with someone who needs to make use of continuous online meetings but I'm guessing that wouldn't work well.
