Description
Hello Workawayers. My name is Sophie. I live in a typical Scottish Manse house in South West Scotland. There is about 10 acres of land. This is mostly a newly planted wood, about 18 years old now. It has become home to many birds, insects and other wildlife. We are working on improving the area to support all these creatures.
Workaway volunteers having been helping here for 5 years now and we have accomplished a lot. We have even dug a pond. Although there are sometimes heavy tasks to do it is mostly the sort of tasks that you would help your Grandparents with. This year, 2021 we need help with all the outdoor tasks. Grass cutting, small landscaping projects, tree pruning and moving plants about.
It would be helpful to have workaways that have done some gardening and who can use small power tools.
There are four areas of activity.
1. Garden, fruit, vegetables and some flowers.
Weeding, watering, composting etc.
2. Woodland area.
Management of trees, paths, wildlife habitat
3. Help on the walls, boundaries, paths, drainage etc
4. The buildings. maintenance of sheds, out door office, drains etc
Volunteers have come from all over, Japan, France, Austria, Brazil, Catalonia and more. They have had a happy time here as it is not a commercial concern, it's relaxed and easy going though the tasks do have to get done! I live here on my own. My family and friends visit and I have several small grandchildren. Scotland's two big cities are each one hour away by train. There are interesting wildlife places, hills to walk in, with a bothy here and there.
We have a good life here, it is quiet but beautiful and everyone is friendly.Types d'aide et opportunités d'apprendre

This is a family home where people come and go and there is always something interesting going on. There are all ages here and we are all into organics, local produce, growing and protecting wild life. We often go into Edinburgh and Glasgow and travellers will learn about rural life in Scotland and city life.

We are creating an eco wood with bee friendly plants, food plants and wild life protection in a seven acre field. After 5 years of workaway help much progress has been made.
There will be a lot of physical outdoor task, some research to do, discussions to contribute to and various planting and general husbandry.Langues parlées

At the moment there is a spare room in the family home but a cabin in the wood may shortly be available.
Autres infos...
This is a very rural area and there are only four buses a day into the nearest small town. However there is a railway station with fast links to several cities. Our visitors have so far found that they get plenty of cultural input and improve their English.

Possibilité d’accueillir les digital nomads
There is a very good internet connection here. Many volunteers have worked from here or applied for university places, workaway opportunities and have downloaded and printed off boarding passes, maps etc. Every room in the house has space for a work table.
Espace pour garer des vans
In the run up to the lockdown, I had several requests from people who asked if they could live out the lockdown here, in an isolated camper van. I was happy for that to happen but travel restrictions meant that, in the end, none of them came here.
Possibilité d'accueillir les animaux
I have had a volunteer with a dog. It worked fine. We even have enough space for a horse. No cats though.
