    Description

How strange. I just realized that my Workaway profile may not show my name. I'm CD. I'm an American expat living in Japan. I'm originally from the West Coast of the US but lived in Hawaii longer than anywhere else. I've also lived in Morocco, Turkey, and here in Japan with long stays in Indonesia, England, and lots of travels in Europe, Asia, North America, and Australia (and a few in Africa - South America not yet!)

This is the house I bought in Otaru, Japan. I love it. It's just a fifteen minute walk from the ropeway and ski lift at Tenguyama and a forty minute walk from Otaru with all its history, romance, and museums. The house has fairly large grounds in terms of a Japanese house including a spring and a stream. The house is 50+ years old but mostly in pretty good shape although there are some things I would like to eventually improve on it. I can host a maximum of two at a time, this is mostly due to the fact that there is only one toilet here. I live here by myself but my teenage daughter comes from Hawaii and stays in the summer and during holidays.

In terms of workaway, I'm looking to utilize the gardens here to produce food, flowers, and positivity. Ideally, To start, I'm looking for Workawayers who are knowledgeable in permaculture design in a four season climate where everything gets buried under several meters of snow in the winter. I'd love to tap into your expertise in planning out how to make the place a food oasis.

I'm an old school couch surfer and have traveled a fair amount of the world. I'm an American expat raised in California and Oregon but who spent the majority of my American life in Hawaii. Now I live in Japan. I've also lived in Turkey, Morocco, the UK, and Indonesia. I love the world.

So - that's the kind of cultural exchange you can expect. We'll hang out, I'll show you around and introduce you to the people I know here, and though we will meet as strangers, I'm sure we will part as friends (and you can likely expect me to visit someday in your home country.).

    Aide

Permaculture design help and gardening. Artistic types are welcome because I'm also a creative and can't help but turn what I find into art that lives here.

Workawayers will be helping me to plan the gardens and helping in them with me. There may be other things that come up while you are here but primarily that is all I am looking for - so other help will be up to you if it suits you.

    Hébergement

I have a dedicated traditional tatami mat room with a single bed for workawayers, guests, and couch surfers. I also have a futon that can be put on the floor in the same room for a second person. We will be sharing kitchen, living room, bathroom, and toilet room. I'll provide staples in terms of food - rice, oatmeal, condiments etc. I'll also provide some veggies. In terms of meat, fish, dairy - these need to be provided by the workawayers for themselves. We can cook together or separate.

There is wifi at the house and it is close to a bus stop as well. There is a convenience store just down the street that offers almost everything needed. Otaru is a cool place with a lot of interesting things to do. Sapporo is a short train ride away as are Niseko and other resort areas.

I'm open to small families (parent and child or both parents and young child) but we will need to discuss details in terms of food, responsibilities, etc.
