Description
Kia Ora and Welcome!
The volunteers will only be helping us with all non-profit activities like: caring about the animals of the sanctuary, helping in the gardens and maintaining the grounds.
We are an Animal Sanctuary & Permaculture Project, established in 2016 as an intentional small community with residents, living-in volunteers and external helpers.
We are currently home to: 4 Alpacas, 2 Donkeys, 2 Minihorses, 7 sheep, 2 pigs, 5 cates, several cows, rabbits, birds, fish, chicken and retired ex-racing Greyhounds which we foster to re-home.
The property has been established under permaculture principles with compost toilet, low waist scheme, food forest and organic veggie garden by experienced specialists with permaculture education. We compost pretty much everything and are using it as fertile organic soil for our organic veggie and fruit gardens - we are also aiming towards being zero waste.
We are compassionate about all beings and therefore suitable for vegans, vegetarians and animal lovers.
EARTHBOUND KITCHEN, the whole foods plant-based kitchen, provides yummy healthy meals for the volunteers including our own produce from the gardens freshly prepared 3 times a day. We don’t have any meat or animal food products on the property and there is also no smoking, drugs or alcohol allowed.
With this intention in mind and set within the breathtaking landscape and wildlife of the Para Wetlands, you'll probably find it's the most tranquil and peaceful place on Earth:)
Our goal is to be an Animal Sanctuary set within permaculture gardens and grounds to care for and re-home animals in need and produce organic food for our own consumption under permaculture principles and share our passion for animals with the community.
Who is involved?
Maia, founder and director, was born in Germany and immigrated in 2011 to NZ. She works on the greyhound re-homing program and fish keeping and focusses on other projects which include essential oil healing, family constellation, yoga classes and workshops on plant-based nutritions.
Alex, certified in animal care, welfare and health, born and raised locally, lives with her pet cows Theodore and Matao and dogs since 2019 at Te and is the manager-on-site, looking after the animals. She's working alongside the volunteers in the gardens, grounds and paddocks and shares the lunch meals in the Kitchen.

After I got to used to using a compost toilet and the less valuable varity of food, I began to enjoy my stay.
It was a bit tricky at first to see through the daily task we had to do.
Maia and her team are great and very kind, in spite of the fact that I missed the communication sometimes.… read more

She would never shy away from learning new tasks and put in all of her effort where she developed new skills in animal care and landscaping.
A slight language barrier made things a bit tricky but did not deter Marine from trying her best.
We wish you all the best on your travels
She is quietly confident, organised, responsible, consistent, down to earth, completely trustworthy, a sharp learner and an easy person to work with and to assign any tasks to. She would make a great volunteer in any setting.

Maia was an outstanding host. As she does not live on the homestead, she is not a looming presence, but she joins the volunteers everyday for lunch and dessert. This allowed for many fascinating conversations about spirituality, medicine, sustainability, and wellness.
