Description
Kia Ora and Welcome!
We are an Animal Sanctuary, established in 2016 as an intentional small community with residents, living-in volunteers and external helpers.
We are currently home to: Alpacas, Donkeys, Ponies, Pigs, Cats, Cattle, Rabbits, Birds, Fish, Chickens, Goats, Turkey's and retired ex-racing Greyhounds which we foster to re-home.
The property has been established under permaculture principles, low waste scheme, fruit orchard and organic veggie garden by experienced specialists with permaculture education (we no longer teach permaculture as we are now focused on the animal sanctuary, but we have a lovely veggie garden and fruit orchard that we regularly work on to provide food for the volunteers). We compost pretty much everything and are using it as fertile organic soil for our organic veggie and fruit gardens - we are also aiming towards being zero waste.
We are compassionate about all beings and therefore suitable for vegans, vegetarians and animal lovers.
FOOD- We provide the basics for example, Rice, Pasta, legumes, Grains, Flours, Nuts and Seeds, Dried Fruits, Spices, Oils, Vinegars, Canned and bottled goods.
We don’t have any meat or animal food products on the property and there is also no smoking, drugs or alcohol allowed.
With this intention in mind and set within the breathtaking landscape and wildlife of the Para Wetlands, you'll probably find it's the most tranquil and peaceful place on Earth.
Our goal is to be an Animal Sanctuary set within permaculture gardens and grounds to care for and re-home animals in need and produce organic food for our own consumption under permaculture principles and share our passion for animals with the community.
We have a sanctuary van on-site that can be used by volunteers as we are not in walking distance to any shops.
Who is involved?
Maia (Comes on-site when available), founder and director, was born in Germany and immigrated in 2011 to NZ. She works on the greyhound re-homing program and fish keeping and focusses on other projects which include essential oil healing, family constellation, yoga classes and workshops on plant-based nutrition.
Alex (lives on-site), certified in animal science, welfare and health, born and raised locally, lives with her pet cows Hustle, Matao, Olive and dogs since 2019 at Te and is the manager-on-site, looking after the animals. She's working alongside the volunteers in the gardens, grounds and paddocks and shares the lunch meals in the Kitchen.
Harrison (lives on-site), certified in animal care and husbandry, lives with his pet Steer Rocky since 2021 at Te and is our permanent volunteer-on-site, helping the sanctuary with animal care and ongoing projects.

I really enjoyed my time with the animals even in one week of rain and mud, we kept going happily.
The kitchen and sleeping paddock are well equipped and Alex answered always mediately on questions.

Lovely, compassionate person who was incredibly loving toward our rescues.
Elena, I sincerely appreciate you giving of your time to help at our refuge.
Volunteers manage their own hours so any over time would have been done by choice, any over time can be accumulated and taken off the following day/ days.
Feeding and cleaning are required each day, maintenance tasks in between are done at volunteers own leisure.

After I got to used to using a compost toilet and the less valuable varity of food, I began to enjoy my stay.
It was a bit tricky at first to see through the daily task we had to do.
Maia and her team are great and very kind, in spite of the fact that I missed the communication sometimes.… read more
She worked very well and put all her effort into every task big or small.
We were very thankful to have her here working along side us.
We wish you all the best with your travels across New Zealand.
She would never shy away from learning new tasks and put in all of her effort where she developed new skills in animal care and landscaping.
A slight language barrier made things a bit tricky but did not deter Marine from trying her best.
We wish you all the best on your travels
She is quietly confident, organised, responsible, consistent, down to earth, completely trustworthy, a sharp learner and an easy person to work with and to assign any tasks to. She would make a great volunteer in any setting.

Maia was an outstanding host. As she does not live on the homestead, she is not a looming presence, but she joins the volunteers everyday for lunch and dessert. This allowed for many fascinating conversations about spirituality, medicine, sustainability, and wellness.
