Description
Hi, we’re Pip and Nige, originally from the UK, but have been living in New Zealand for the past seventeen years.
We absolutely love our adopted country and would love to be able to share our home and experiences of New Zealand’s amazing lifestyle and culture with others.
In our early sixties, with our daughter living her best life in Auckland, we enjoy a quiet, rural lifestyle on the boundary of Auckland and Northland, where we’ve created a calm and peaceful environment to enjoy, with beautiful landscaped gardens full of native plants, centred around a duckpond.
We can offer an inviting place to stay, where you can experience living closely with nature, going with the flow of the Universe and learning about how to live lightly on the land. We’re 80% self-sufficient, including harvesting our own water, growing fruit and vegetables and living as waste free as possible.
We share our home with our dog, Archie, two chooks, three guinea fowl, three ducks, and a vast array of local birds, lizards and eels and are looking for help around the garden, weeding, planting, help making compost, planting vegetables, painting windows, etc.
In exchange, you’ll experience living harmoniously with nature, without the interference of social media and hopefully learn how to create a calm and peaceful retreat from today’s busy world.
Workawayers will love the area, which is very beautiful… with lots of amazing beaches, surfing, kayaking, bush and coastal walks, marine parks, a local regional park. We’re also very close to the Kaipara Harbour, which is great for fishing.
It’s a popular visitor area and wine growing region, so you may be able to pick up seasonal work at local vineyards or accommodation providers. -

Echange culturel et opportunités d'apprendre
Having spent most of our life in the UK, we’re now naturalised Kiwis and love sharing what we love about our new country.
We’ve visited many places across both islands, so can offer great tips about where to travel.
Since moving to our rural idyll, we’ve learnt to live lightly on the land, and to care and respect the local environment. We recycle as much as we can via chickens, compost making etc. harvest our own rainwater for household use and drinking water and grow our own fruit and vegetables.
Pip is also an energy healer and practises Qigong, so if you’re spiritual, she looks forward to sharing all the conversations it’s difficult to have with others.
From our time together, you’ll enjoy learning about New Zealand and its culture, appreciating a rural lifestyle without the interference of social media, living in harmony with nature, and self-sufficiency.
Nige is also happy to share his knowledge on pest control.
In return, we’re looking forward to hearing about your country and culture, places you’ve visited and learning new skills that you’re happy to share with us.
Socially, there’s not too much near us. It’s 12km to the nearest settlement, but the local community has a very active Facebook page, and there’ll usually a good response to requests for work etc. -

Aide
We’re looking for someone who loves being in the garden and getting their hands in the soil. There’s lots of weeding and general garden maintenance to catch up with after its winter hibernation, so will mostly involve weeding, planting veggies, helping make compost, strimming, digging out thistles, wild ginger etc. You’ll need to be physically fit and strong for most tasks.
Nige may also appreciate a hand manually removing duck weed from the duck pond.along with help rubbing down and painting windows.
We’ll be working alongside you some of the time, but will also leave you to work independently and choose jobs according the weather conditions. -

Hébergement
You’ll stay in a self-contained cottage on the land.
There’s a large bedroom with a Queen bed (all linen and towels provided), lounge, kitchen and bathroom (with a shower). There’s an outdoor tub, surrounded by flowers, in the garden.
You’ll have your own washer and shed storage and there’s plenty of room to park a camper van.
We’re happy to offer two options:
1. Help five hours a day (each, if a couple), over five days.
Breakfast and lunch provisions will be provided for you to prepare yourself and eat in your own place so you get time to yourselves, and we’ll all share dinner together at our place.
(Accommodation provided for seven days)
2. Help three hours a day (each), over five days:
For the days you work, you provide your own breakfast and lunch and share a cooked meal with us in the evening.
This option gives you lots of free time to enjoy exploring the area.
(Accommodation provided for seven days)
Please note - we’re meat eaters and I’m hopeless cooking vegetarian food. -
Autres infos...
We’re a strictly smoke / drug free property (including vaping) and enjoy a quiet lifestyle with no noise interference, so keeping your music down would be appreciated.
We’re on septic waste, so you won’t be able to flush personal hygiene products etc. down the loo.
We provide chemical free body wash, soap, shampoo and conditioner.
You’ll definitely need a car to get around, as we’re quite rural, but there are amazing beaches, marine reserves, coastal and bush walks, farmers markets, vineyards and regional parks all within a 6 - 30km drive. It’s a very beautiful tourist area.
We have a fishing rod if you fancy a spot of fishing on the harbour, plus a boogie board, and if you’d like painting, there’s an easel set up in the cabana next to the duckpond.
To visit the city, there’s buses into Auckland CBD from Wellsford (12km). It’s 120km away and takes roughly an hour and a half by car. There, you can do all the usual touristy stuff, like climbing a volcano, bungy jumping, taking a harbour cruise etc.
If you’d like to love nature and want to experience living more sustainably, you’ll love it here.
