    Description

We are a sharehouse with a live-in landlady (me), who has a chronic illness and can no longer do strenuous work in the garden, so I need some help! We have a productive orchard, veggie gardens and a giant frog pond (rewilded swimming pool) that brave souls can go for a dip in. There is also a sauna, and possibly the best view of kunanyi/mt Wellington in all of Hobart. We back onto bushland, so you can go exploring right out the back gate. There are several housemates living here, one very friendly cuddly dog who already loves you, a cat who is pretty friendly (for a cat), 3 chickens, and a million frogs. I am a pretty new workaway host, but my first experience this year was excellent, and I have "wwoofed" in the past and loved it, and also hosted couch surfers and bike travellers.

Right now my first guests have just left and I'm having a rest and planning my summer. I think I may be up for hosting again for a week in January.

I used to work for Parks and Wildlife, have a great collection of maps, can give you plenty of bushwalking and exploring tips, and tell you cool things about Tassie's unique plants and animals. I've also been interested in sustainable living and ecology for a long time, and have accumulated a hodgepodge of skills and knowledge I can share. We also have some multucultural housemates at the moment (Nepal and Indonesia), and they may be willing to cook some delicious shared dinners. One housemate has a lot of local rock climbing knowledge, and another is training to be a forest bathing practitioner and is interested in social permaculture. I am keen to hear from new perspectives and learn new skills from you too, especially as I can't travel myself any more. We have a piano and other musical instruments that you are welcome to play.

Jobs will include gardening, pruning, mulching and some small house maintainence tasks like sanding and painting. My housemate is also hoping to build a new chicken house this summer and would love help. I will be home most of the day to give guidance, but need to rest a lot, so will also leave you alone a lot of the time. It seems that 4-5 hours a day, for 5 days a week (about 22 hours a week), is the usual expectation for food and board. I want you to have a good time, so I won't be a slave driver and can be flexible!

I will have a chat with you about your food preferences and make a plan before you arrive. I imagine I will organise shared dinners, but will provide food that can help yourself to for breakfast, lunch and snacks. You are welcome to cook some meals yourself. I mainly eat vegetarian, with occasional wallaby. Others eat meat in the house. I'm familiar with various dietary needs like vegan and gluten free.

You will have a private room downstairs with a double bed, unlimited WiFi, and access to a shared bathroom and kitchen.

Hoping to host respectful, sensible guests who are considerate of sharing space and resources with others and don't wear any strong perfumes. There are so many beautiful places to explore in Hobart and southern Tasmania in your free time, and I can give tips. We are in South Hobart, with easy bus access to the CBD, or walking takes about 45 minutes and you may spot a rivulet platypus on the way. There is easy parking on the street if you have your own car. There are bush tracks that least the top of kunanyi/mt Wellington right out our back door, local cafes and the famous Cascade brewery just down the road. There are good swimming beaches less than 15 minutes drive away. (We have a couple of bikes you could borrow).
