Myself and my partner Julien, Felix ( 3 years) and Fergus ( 1 year ) live and work on our farm. We are 8 miles from the village of Ullapool down a private bumpy road so feels very remote and even getting there is a bit of an adventure. We run a hill farm with sheep and cattle and well as a couple of self catered properties. We try and live as self sufficiently as possible producing our own electricity and growing as much as possible in our garden.
We would really appreciate help with au pairing Felix and Fergus. Felix is starting Nursery in January so would be advantageous if you had a Manual driving licence, as we have a manual car available.
House and pet sitting while we are away or busy lambing. help will be asked on the farm or with farm animals. There will usually be someone around to help with any questions or go on adventures together during your time off.
We usually go away for small trips for example during April we lamb our sheep on a farm near inverness
We are looking for help to get our walled garden up and running every season. Even better if you have experience or are super keen and want to learn.
You will be out of mobile phone reception and very limited internet as we have a small allowance per month. So prefer workaways who want a digital detox, Enjoy hiking, nature and are self motivated. We also have no screen for our kids.

We love hosting people from all different countries and sharing our way of life with them. We try for self sufficiently, making our own electricity and produce our vegetables and meat from the farm and garden. Volunteers will benefit from an amazing opportunity to stay in the highlands of Scotland living on a traditional hill farm. Julien is French and speaks to the boys in French but we speak English at home, so its a great place to improve your English. We try hard to make this a great exchange for both of us, language, music, books, traditions, food and also work and skills.
The help will be au pairing Felix and Fergus this includes helping around the house with cooking, laundry and cleaning. I need help organizing and sorting out toys and clothes.
We also ask someone to help while we are away to house sit, this entails looking after the pets, we have dogs, ducks and chickens. So requires someone who is independent and happy with some responsibility.
Help is very dependent on what tasks we are doing when you stay. We should be able to outline our plans for the time you would stay with us. We will be able to show you how to look after the place while we are away. As we make our own electricity and live off grid we also try for self sufficiency. This will suit someone who is interested in this type of lifestyle.
We would prefer a workaway who would like to stay this entire season with us. This way they would get to know the area better and the routine on the place. It would also help to get to know Felix and Fergus so that they do not have to keep meeting new workaways often and has a familiar face. Please get in touch if this appeals to you.
Cet hôte propose un échange linguistique
Julien is French and we are trying to teach the two boys French from the start so love having French spoken around the place.
Hébergement
We love to make you feel at home here and part of the family so you will be living in our cottage with us. Your bedroom will either be a shared attic room with other volunteers or a private room or a separate hut depending on availability. We will let you know before if we are expecting other volunteers during your stay. We have double or single beds and a shared bathroom. We cook and eat meals together. We try to eat as much from the farm as possible so help with food preparation from the garden would be useful. I love it when volunteers help with the shopping list also. If food from the walled garden and meat from the farm appeals to you this place would suit people who like local home produce.

We are quite remote so good for those people seeking to get of the beaten track and wanting a bit more adventure and lost in nature. On the farm you can enjoy walking, climbing, riding, sailing, fly fishing or staying out in a bothy. We live in an incredible remote location with great walks from the door step. To show you have read my profile before applying please mention the word unicorn in your email of introduction....Sorry getting a bit fed up with copy paste and no thought to the first emails to me. Thanks.
The village of Ullapool is 8 miles away. We have bikes you can borrow- if you can help with bike maintenance always appreciated. Happy to offer lifts when we are going. Ullapool is a small but bustling fishing village with cafes, restaurants, art galleries, book shops, pubs and some great live music.
From Ullapool there is the possibility of exploring further afield. The nearest city is Inverness which is an hour and a half away with a couple of buses going a day.
Looking for people with lots of positive energy, common sense, and the ability to put tools back!
We lost our 2 year old son Leon in an accident on the farm, I need to make workawayers aware of this before they come and stay.

Hello!! I’m a little bit late, but as they say in Spain “mas vale tarde que nunca” :)
This was my very first Workaway experience, and it truly couldn’t have been better. It was even more amazing than I expected! From the very first day, I felt genuinely welcomed into their home and embraced as part of the family.
Looking back, I realize that I… read more arrived at exactly the right moment, it was the perfect match between what I was searching for and what they were offering. I also got involved in many different kinds of work, each of which helped me grow and develop both personally and practically. They taught me so many valuable things (far more than I expected) and I couldn’t be more grateful for everything they shared with me: their time, their knowledge, their patience, and their kindness.
They are truly a lovely family, and I will always look back on this experience with warmth and gratitude. It was a special chapter in my life that I will never forget.
My experience at the farm was amazing. I loved looking after Felix and Fergus and getting involved with gardening, feeding the animals, and working alongside people from differnt parts of the world. What an incredible time in the Scottish Highlands!
My boyfriend, Timo, and I had the pleasure of joining Iona's family for a month in April. Iona welcomed us warmly and included us in her family's daily life on the farm. There is always something to work on, so it will definitely not get boring. Luckily, we joined the family during lambing season so that we could see lots of little lambs joining the family. We will always remember our first Ceilidh with the family in Ullapool and the funny Easter hunt. Thank you so much for this incredible experience. We hope to see you all again and see how much our planted trees might have grown and what Fergus and Felix are up to :)

I have had an amazing 5 weeks with Iona, Julian and Felix! I felt extremely welcomed and I settled into their daily lives very quickly. Even though I come from a similar background I still learned a lot about their lifestyle and unique way of life.
I got to do a large range of help, from been Iona's extra pair of hands while she looked after… read more Felix, helping out Julian with his day to day chores and of course cleaning on Saturday for change over.
I got to explore the farm, riding Iona’s horses in the weekends and late evening rides, visit / swim in the waterfalls and just enjoy time with their amazing family, even at a Highland Games and a ceilidh!
To people considering staying with Julian and Iona, don’t get scared off by the midges, most of the time I was there they were not an issue. Try and stay for a decent amount of time, I stayed for 5 weeks but I with I had stayed longer.
Thank you Iona, Julian, Mini Monsieur Felix and the rest of your family (and pets) for a great experience.

Staying with Iona and Julien (and stef who's currently working with them) was my first Workaway experience and I had a fab time. The farm is pretty remote and it does help to have your own car to explore a bit further the area (it's really stunning in the NW of Scotland) but at the same time there is loads of hiking and waterfalls to explore from the door and if you love the outdoors this would be a great place for you.

Yeeehaa :) what a treat to be hosted up at Rhidorroch by Iona, Julien and King Leon (their wee son)!
Lindsey and I had a blast being part of the family and helping with an assortment of odd jobs; gardening, painting, cleaning the gutters, stacking wood, looking after Leon and feeding the animals (pigs, chickens and dogs - the sheep and horses… read more were wintering on their other farm). We were treated to some awesome local and authentic food (be prepared for lots of venison), as well as local seafood on occasion - we learned how to cook lobster and crab from scratch. Our weekends were full of superb walks (not quite spring and no midges, super beautiful time) - there is a local bothy nearby and a wee fishing hut and lots to explore!
Things to know for future workawayers:
Long & Bumpy Drive Way (for us!) - we have a small mini and the drive way in to the house wasn't crazy difficult, but with the car being low to the ground, we had a reasonably treacherous journey in and out as we navigated the gravel and various potholes. It is a long way in to the house as well, so if you think you are on the wrong road, you probably aren't, you just haven't arrived yet ;)
Cooking - we shared the cooking with our hosts and they were awesome and we made a wee grocery list and the mix was great!
Rooster - a morning call was loud and raring. We suggest bringing ear plugs. We got used to it - kinda.
Dogs - there is a pack of Collies and a Black lab and they are in and out of the house and all amazing! Getting to know them was a favourite part of our trip, indeedio!!
All Weather in a Day - this is classic Scotland, but just be prepared and flexible as well intentioned and best laid plans are always subject to the weather (Iona and Julien were good at giving us inside and outside jobs so we had the option).
Lots of Jobs - it is a big Estate, so there is always lots of work to be done and Iona and Julien were awesome and asking what we preferred and were most excited to try out hands at.
We are excited to go back at some point!!
