    Description

Welcome to our shelter for stray dogs in Pelion, Greece. Our mission is to improve the lives of homeless dogs and give them the chance to find a loving, permanent home. To make this possible, we rely on the support of dedicated volunteers who share our passion for animal welfare.

The shelter is located in the beautiful Pelion Mountains, just outside the village of Argalasti, surrounded by unspoiled nature, mountains, and views of the sea. It is a peaceful and inspiring place to work closely with animals while enjoying the unique Greek landscape.

    🐶 Volunteer Tasks

As a volunteer, you will support the daily care and well-being of the dogs. Your main responsibilities include:
    - Feeding and caring for the dogs
    - Cleaning kennels and common areas
    - Walking the dogs and providing enrichment
    - Supporting basic training and socialisation, especially for dogs that have never lived in a home
    - Administering basic treatments, such as giving medication, deworming tablets, and applying spot-on treatments

Guidance will be provided by our lovely shelter manager Anika ;-)

To help our dogs find families, volunteers are also asked to assist with taking photos and videos for adoption platforms, which play a vital role in successful adoptions.

In addition, there are ongoing maintenance and upkeep tasks around the shelter and the house where you will stay. Volunteers with practical or hands-on skills are especially appreciated, as maintaining a safe and clean environment is essential for the dogs’ well-being.

    🏡 Accommodation

Accommodation is provided in a house in the nearby village of Argalasti, about a 20-minute walk from the shelter. The house is a traditional two-storey village home with a private garden and courtyard. During your stay, you’ll have the opportunity to experience local Greek life, enjoy the surrounding nature, and explore the area in your free time.

    💛 Who We’re Looking For

    We welcome volunteers who are:
    - Animal lovers with a genuine interest in dog welfare
    - Reliable, motivated, and willing to help where needed
    - Comfortable working outdoors and as part of a team

If you’re looking for a meaningful volunteering experience, enjoy spending time with dogs, and want to make a real difference, we would love to welcome you to our team!

    Echange culturel et opportunités d'apprendre

Volunteers at our dog shelter will benefit from a rich cultural exchange and gain valuable experiences. By living and working closely with others from around the world, you'll have the chance to share stories, traditions, and perspectives, fostering a deeper understanding of different cultures. You'll also immerse yourself in Greek culture, experiencing the local way of life, cuisine, and hospitality.

On a practical level, you'll develop skills in animal care, training, and shelter management, all while contributing to a meaningful cause. The teamwork and problem-solving required in this environment will enhance your communication and collaboration abilities. Additionally, the experience of helping to rehome dogs will give you insight into the world of animal welfare and the rewarding feeling of making a real difference in the lives of these animals.

Your main responsibilities will involve supporting the daily care of our rescue dogs. This includes feeding, basic grooming, giving medication and making sure the dogs are happy, healthy, and well looked after. Regular walks and basic training are also an important part of preparing them for adoption, so your involvement will make a direct difference in their journey to a new home. Puppy socialization is also vital: be prepared to snuggle with a bunch of enthusiastic little furballs!

In addition to dog care, we may also need help with general shelter maintenance. This might involve small repairs, cleaning, painting and other practical tasks around the property.

The house you will be staying in also needs some upkeep. This includes keeping shared areas clean and tidy, doing some laundry, and preparing rooms for new arrivals. These tasks are considered part of your volunteer hours. House duties are shared among volunteers on a rotating basis, with approximately one hour per day assigned.

If you enjoy being creative, there are also opportunities to get involved in our rehoming work—taking good photos of the dogs, writing short descriptions for their profiles, helping us share their stories, or even creating Instagram reels and content if that is up your alley. These contributions are a huge help in finding the right families for each dog :-)

    Hébergement

You will be staying in a traditional Greek village house located in the heart of Argalasti, in the Pelion region. The house is large and has a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, perfect for volunteers who enjoy simple living and being part of a community.

The house has a charming neoclassical layout with a central hallway and rooms of equal size on either side. On the ground floor, you’ll find a spacious kitchen and dining area where everyone can gather, a large bathroom, and one bedroom. A wooden staircase leads to the upper floor, which offers four additional bedrooms.

    Upstairs, there are:
-two private rooms, each with a double bed
-two shared rooms: one with a bunk bed and one with two single beds

Solo travelers may be asked to share a room with another guest, while couples will, of course, have their own private room with a double bed. If you prefer a single room, please mention this in your application and we'll see if it can be arranged.

The house can accommodate up to 6 people during the winter and up to 7 people during the warmer months, when the downstairs bedroom is also in use. All common areas are shared.

Heating is provided by a wood-burning stove on the ground floor. Please note that there is no individual heating in the bedrooms. Winters in Argalasti can be cold, so we recommend bringing lots of warm clothing.

Outside, there is a stone-paved courtyard with an orange tree offering shade during the summer months, and a garden area to the side. If you're staying longer, you're welcome to create a vegetable patch and enjoy the fruits of your labour :-)

The house is situated in the village of Argalasti, which offers a range of local amenities including two supermarkets, a pharmacy, a butcher, a bakery, and a weekly farmers’ market on Saturdays. There are also plenty of tavernas and cafés where you can enjoy the local culture and cuisine.

There is regular public transport to the nearby town of Volos (about 45 minutes away), to the sea (15 minutes away), and to other surrounding villages.

There is also a resident house dog, Mina. She is very relaxed, affectionate and part of daily house life. Your duties with her will be to feed and walk her and give her lots of cuddles ;-)

    Mina (8 ans)

Mina is super chilled and cuddly. She's the house dog and she is there to provide doggy therapy to whoever might be missing their own dog! She was a stray from the village and as she is an older dog, the house is more comfortable for her to stay at rather than the shelter :-)
