Description
Kia ora! We are a community of families, single people and children who share a life of hospitality and prayer. We host groups and individuals most days of the week to join in our community rhythms and we hold a special place for those who struggle in the city and are marginalized. There are roughly 18-25 people who live on site including children. We have extensive gardens, areas of native planting, pasture with sheep as well as chickens. We also have numerous painting and other maintenance projects on the go and lots of gardening work. Those who have trades skills are super helpful but there are also lots of tasks that involve no experience.
We are flexible, but the general routine we ask for from workawayers is to work from 8.30am-12.30pm, Tuesday-Saturday. If folk prefer to do 2 or 3 longer days, or not work on the weekend, etc. that's fine. We can work it out.
We have daily shared meals and shared times of prayer that workawayers would be welcome to join in on (though this is not compulsory).
For WorkAwayers coming for shorter stays we prefer if you can arrive on Tuesday afternoon and leave on Sunday afternoon. Every Sunday afternoon-Tuesday afternoon we have a quieter time and we also use this time to have our meetings. If workawayers are staying for a longer stay, or if you are coming for a shorter stay and it's necessary for you to be with us in our quiet time (Sun afternoon-Tuesday afternoon) we would set you up to operate reasonably independently for that time. Over the years we've developed communal rhythms of rest, work and prayer. Perhaps workawayers may benefit from experiencing this?
We are situated at the foot of the beautiful Tararua range, with local tracks being within a 5 minute walk of our property (Kapakapanui).
Te Tiriti o Waitangi and Māori culture are important to us. We have a kaumatua (Māori Elder) on our team and incorporate aspects of tikanga Māori (Māori culture) in to many areas of our shared life.Types d'aide et opportunités d'apprendre

Aide
We always need help with things like: gardening, planting, weeding. As well as property help like painting. If people are comfortable with children then supporting us with our children while we do these jobs is also very helpful. We have daily rhythms of shared food and the chores that go along with this, so there is always the opportunity to do cooking / cleaning type help.
We try to work together, however if someone has the ability to do tasks independently at times, that is helpful.Langues parlées

We have a range of accomodation including a house bus, cabins, and a fully functional guest house with bathroom, and kitchen. Depending on what is happening and what other guests are coming through will determine the accomodation we can offer.
Autres infos...
Owning a car is advantageous as we are 10 minutes away from the nearest public transport. We can introduce you to our favourite local hikes, beautiful walking spots, cafe's and bars. There are always people around at the monastery for those that like to socialise.
If you enjoy singing that's great as we sing together a lot. Also we do love it when people share our times of karakia / prayer.Informations complémentaires

Possibilité d’accueillir les digital nomads
Our guest 4G internet modem is located in our shared lounge/ hall. It is not fibre, but the internet is sufficient for video conferencing and most other normal online work.
Espace pour garer des vans
We have large parking areas. Potentially we could setup and extension chord for power. We have a sewage system that can cope with sewage being emptied into it.
Possibilité d'accueillir les animaux
Generally we prefer not to hose pets and we will only host pets by negotiation: - dogs OK if: are friends, outdoors only, safe, and don't bark at night / are quiet. - because of the large number of native birds in our area we don't allow cats (unless they are house cats setup not to roam outside). - Other pets need to be child safe and not cause issues with our other guests and animals.

I am really grateful for this last travelling experience in NZ at the Monastery. Although I just stayed short I had plenty of conversations and my time there felt much longer. The accommodation (prayer hut at the sheep paddock) was the most beautiful accommodation I had so far on work away and I miss the sheep already. The… read more
