I stayed here for about 3 weeks this past May and had such a blast! It was my first workaway experience and I could not have asked for better hosts. The owners are such kind and warm-hearted folks who really care about the people and community around them.

My absolute favorite part of the stay was eating dinner as a big group together every night and spending hours at the table, chatting and sharing stories. There’s no tv and the wifi isn’t very strong, so it was honestly really refreshing to have my world shrink down to this charming castle and its wonderful residents for a while.
I wouldn’t recommend this stay for people who are not at least B1/conversational in German, or for anyone who is afraid of spiders. Unless you are hoping to conquer your fear through exposure therapy. :)
Kannawurf has a very special place in my heart now and I hope to come visit again someday soon!

I'm writing this kind of late, since I stayed at the castle for 3 weeks in May; but I have definitely not forgotten about it and never will!

I was working in the garden, so my working days were really chill and didn't feel like work; also, they're quite flexible with the working hours.
Bea knows so much about plants and gardening, so you should definitely ask her about it, she would love to share her wisdom!
It was also an absolute privilege to meet Roland at the castle: he has such a lively soul, just being in his presence really puts you in a happy mood; he's full of knowledge and a crafty man, truly an inspiration to others!
Honestly, I could write so many good things about every single person I met at the castle, so in the end, if you're thinking of volunteering here, I highly recommend it!
Ps. If you do go, ask about Gunther!

I'm leaving my feedback late but wow, my stay at the castle has stayed so vivid in my mind. I stayed with Roland and the castle crew for two weeks in May. They were kind to pick me up from the train station and got me a Thüringer bratwurst, what a delicious welcome.

He took me and another workawayer to a magical cold spring and to see an archeological site. While I sometimes had a hard time communicationing since I don't know a lot of German, all the people I met at the castle were full of life and passion, and that can be communicated without many words.

Ps. When the weather isn't great it does get real cold in the castle, so make sure you don't mind that.

The community is awesome, comprised by the hosts, local townsfolk who want to help with the castle and the workawayers. There is always someone interesting to talk to and work with, which makes the time there so fulfilling. Dinners here tend to feel like a party, since there is so much laughter, so much happiness to be there. Everything we do in the castle feels like a successful team effort, and yes, I said "we", because you instantly feel a part of it and you want to see it progress.

My work was with Heinz, one of the owners of the castle (they realized quite quickly that I wouldn’t be much help in the construction ground). We worked in what used to be the shooting room, applying lime/sand to the stone walls and then using completely natural plaster to smooth the outside. I didn't have any previous experience, but Heinz taught me everything, and we passed the time meditating, singing, or chatting. It required a bit of patience and skill; we called it art.
After work, the afternoon mainly consisted of chatting and drinking outside with others at the castle. I also learned to play böll (european aristocratic lawn game, kind of like a larger version of marbles) and throw spears. We would then eat dinner, and continue to talk until it got dark. The days were so peaceful, and I could feel that everyone enjoyed life at their own pace.
