    Description

So after all the uncertainties that Covid 19 has thrown at us, we now have an opportunity for two people (a couple or two friends prepared to share accommodation) who would like to join us on Inishbofin and become a core part of our Summer 21 team. We are also seeking some last minute Workawayers to just help us with some garden preparation in the lead up to the Summer season. In the latter category, we are ideally looking for people who are available to arrive as soon as possible now that inter-county travel is permitted again.
Having developed a market gardening operation and beautiful gardens at our Farm which overlooks Inishbofin's famously beautiful harbour, we have developed a whole range of artisan food products made from the garden's produce which we sell from the farm
Now we have converted an historic farm building to create an artisan food shop which will replace a tiny selling space which we created in the farm cottage porch. Now, the builders have left the site and we are seeking help to clear up the gardens after our builders have left and with preparation for the Summer season and the next phase of the flowering of our project.

For the season itself, we are looking for people with good gardening/ food preparation knowledge who could stay for the Summer season. Accommodation offered is a beautiful caravan in a stunning location on our farm. Right now, the garden is looking well although in need of much TLC although our polytunnel has shredded by storms so some heavy work is needed to finish digging up the remnants of the buried plastic cover in preparation for applying the new one. Also, we need to get more crops in the ground (including some currently chitting potatoes and preparation of some beds to take those potatoes as well as other crops. The next phase will see many different types of jobs in the garden from heavy digging and bed preparation to sowing crops; weeding and tending beds; and some work in the kitchen and shop: basically, whatever is needed to get us ready for the Summer.
We have just completed the conversion of our farm sheds to create three spaces including its center-piece - an artisan food shop which we plan to open this summer to sell our own and other artisan's food products - and potentially, a prep kitchen and further staff/volunteering accommodation.
In the Summer we will also be hosting farm walks/talks with tea and bakes afterwards and possibly creating a transient (weather permitting) pop up cafe in our walled garden where visitors can share a coffee and a bake made from the garden's bounty. We hope to create a whole visitor experience including the artisan food shop, the "café", the visitor gardens and a stroll through our Corncrake meadow
Workaways will experience the beauty of INISHBOFIN island at the heart of the Wild Atlantic Way. They will be expected to help out maintaining our gardens, sowing, transplanting , tending and harvesting the crops, helping in the kitchen, selling in our new shop, dealing with visitors or whatever else needs doing around the farm.
Our farm is a spectacular 2.5 hectare holding on the gently south sloping land overlooking the harbour of this beautiful island off the Connemara coast – one of the most westerly places in Europe.
We have developed beautiful market and visitor gardens - producing organically grown fruit and vegetables and downstream artisan food products and cater mainly for Summer tourists but also locals and some island food businesses.
We make downstream products from our garden produce (pestos, jams, chutneys, ice cream etc) and created a small shop in our cottage porch where we sold these products as well as our fresh garden produce. This shop will now transfer to our new building. Our long-term aim is to develop a residential Permaculture and sustainability centre on the farm and to develop our new artisan food shop and visitor gardens offering
Over the Summer, help is needed to maintain our farm gardens, tend and weed the vegetables, look after the polytunnel, harvest and preserve crops, process the garden's bounty into delicious products for sale, sell what produce there is at our new farm shop and the weekly Summer market, deal with visitors and generally help out wherever needed.
Since purchasing the farm in 2011, we have been developing the gardens themselves which now include a vegetable garden, a root crop field, a polytunnel, a walled garden and a, currently overgrown, herb garden (planned with seating which will have beautiful views of the comings and goings of the island's harbour). The vegetable garden has been in operation since 2012 and the root crop field since 2014.
Expect at least some hard physical outdoor work, practical learning, a great sense of community, beautiful walks, stunning sights, really stimulating music, good food and great craic.
Anthony grows the vegetables and Julia has developed some fantastic jams, chutneys, ketchups, hummus, pestoes, cordials and other products made from the garden bounty. We sell these items and our fresh veg from the farm and at the weekly Summer market.
We would like you to help twenty five hours per week in return for your keep with a small contribution to expenses. There is also some wonderfully fresh produce from our garden and a good source of local fish and lamb.
Ideal candidates will be focused and organized, be able to turn their hand to most jobs, will have skills in gardening, cooking and/or tourism related fields and will have a love of nature and the outdoors. References from some sources are preferred but we may accept non-Workaway references if they are appropriate.
Inishbofin is a spectacularly beautiful island and ecotourism destination served by a thrice daily ferry in Summer It has a pub, a post office and a shop, three hotels, two daytime cafés, a restaurant in a London bus, a beautiful hostel and an excellent broadband service.
There is a large community centre within 100m from the Farm where there is a library, an internet cafe, a large hall (where indoor soccer and badminton can be played), a creche and exhibition space. The farm is located in a stunning position overlooking the island's harbour.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
    Anthony and Julia
