Zambia ! The real Africa! Zambia is in the heart of central Africa and has a variety of experiences to offer. People here are open and welcoming. Being in the middle of a continent, Zambia forms a cross roads of sorts and there are many different peoples to meet.

Our small farm is situated just outside Ndola. We run a small herd of sheep but mostly enjoy the tranquility of living away from the hustle and bustle. Coming home each day to enjoy the milky way and waking up to wonderful sunrises. We love animals and apart from the sheep, there are some very indulged dogs and cats as well as donkeys, ducks and various others. Our four children are grown up and have moved away from home. My husband has his business in Ndola.

I run the Ndola SPCA or animal shelter where we look after abandoned and stray dogs and cats. We also go out to do rabies and vaccination drives. Plenty of help is needed at the shelter – maintenance, exercising and socializing animals, newsletters and outreach programs educating people about animals.

Variety is the spice of life. We also have a lodge on the banks of the Zambezi River in the Chiawa area. This is a 6-7 hr drive from Ndola. Wildtracks is 40km from the Lower Zambezi National Park. Here we offer self-catering accommodation with a difference and we also run school camps. Our school camps are aimed at conservation awareness, personal development and leadership training whilst enjoying the great outdoors.

We are also involved in exciting community projects in the Chiawa area such as bee keeping workshops and supporting a rural school which is an exciting challenge.

Depending on whether you are at the river or up on the Copperbelt the tasks would be different. We expect any workawayers to be enthusiastic and get stuck in using whatever skills they have to offer. It is difficult to say exactly what you will need to do as everyday is a surprise here in Zambia which is what makes life exciting to say the least.

At the river it could be serving meals at school camps but it may also be a trip to town, helping to shop for the camp. It may be tidying up and helping with weekend guests, packing cooler boxes for the boats or helping to fill pot holes on the road.

In Ndola it could be walking dogs, sitting with a cat, designing a flyer or sending e-mails. Workaways need to be prepared to stay a minimum of 2 to 4 weeks as this means there is time to settle in and then time to get something done before moving on.

Chalets, Safari tents at the river depending on number of people staying in the lodge

In Ndola, Workawayers would have to live as part of our family. We live in a spacious farmhouse just out of town.

Whether in Ndola or down on the river we would expect any Workaways to be part of our team and pitch in wherever needed. When we are busy it will be go, go, go. Part of the excitement being to be part of the team. Once the hype is over then there will be time to relax and find out more about Zambia. There are many interesting places to visit and things to discover. We will of course provide accommodation and food whilst you are actually staying with us. It is possible to get most places in Zambia using long distance coaches and taxis in the towns. One can fly to most of the main tourist destinations.
