    Description

Namaste, we are a family of five people from Nepal. Our farm, cottage, and eco-project are located in a small village about 10km northeast from Pokhara, Nepal. The farm and cottage is a traditional Nepali-style homestead made from local materials and has been been around for hundreds of years. The land it occupies consists of several layers of terrace-farm plots and a variety of fruit trees and bamboo. We need volunteers to help maintain the property, work on a small-scale farm, and help with a eco-friendly building project using sustainable, locally acquired materials including our own source of bamboo. Currently, we have 3 rooms available and enough accommodation space for 6 people, possibly more space for a big group. The kitchen has a traditional wood-burning stove. Volunteers stay for free and receive 2 daily meals (even on off days) in exchange for farming, animal husbandry, and sustainable building work.

There are plenty of activities to do around the area. Nearby our homestead are several lakes that are great for swimming, biodiverse forests and rural lands ideal for spotting animals, and stunning views of the mighty Himalayan mountains. If you need to go into the city, it is a short journey (~40min to 1 hour) from the village by bus or motorbike. The area is famous for the most beautiful mountain views in the world.

During the stay in the our homestead, volunteers will be immersed in Nepalese culture in a location where people mostly speak the Nepali language only. Volunteers can learn typical Nepalese cooking, participate in Nepalese religious/cultural festivals, learn Nepalese language through immersion, experience the joy and tranquility of rural village life in Nepal, and learn how to farm and build using sustainable and traditional methods/materials.

We will also benefit from diverse ideas and input, and we love hearing new ideas from travelers from all over the world. We want to grow and impact our local community in a positive, environmentally-friendly way, so any knowledge and cooperation in this regard is very valuable to us.

We need help gardening, tending to agriculture, and tending to goats on our homestead. Goats are very easy to tend to, but require attention to make certain they do not destroy valuable plants and crops. Otherwise it is a very relaxing and enjoyable task to watch over grazing goats.

We also need help with our ongoing eco-projects such as cutting and processing bamboo, gathering and preparing sand and stones, and clearing overgrown land for construction. We use sustainable and locally produced materials to build ecologically friendly structures. We are planning a recycled bottle building currently.

Daily tasks include: cutting grass for animal feed, caring for crops and clearing weeds, plantation of different crops depending on the season, vegetable gardening, and general maintenance of the homestead. We kindly request volunteers to work for 4-5 hours, 5 days a week in exchange for free accommodation, language exchange, and traditional farming knowledge. Additionally, volunteers will receive daily meals, even on days off.

    Hébergement

We have 3 rooms (2 beds each) available in our homestead with a traditional kitchen, as well as several tents and sleeping bags for camping during nice weather. The toilet is a basic latrine (squatter toilet). Clean drinking water and washing water is readily available, and comes straight from natural spring water sources located deep in the mountainside.

The building is very basic, traditional style Nepalese home, so please come prepared knowing this. Accommodation is closer to camping than it is to staying in a guesthouse and we are close to nature at all times. We have electricity and electric lighting, but internet access is limited at this time. We are working on setting up high-speed WiFi on the homestead property to accommodate digital nomads. We are also quickly expanding, and volunteers may have the opportunity to assist in building new, sustainable structures that can house future guests and volunteers.

We cook traditional Nepalese food, mostly vegetarian. Based on Nepalese dining customs, we provide two major meals a day plus two tea and snack breaks. Tea is served around 7 am. Breakfast is served around 9 to 10 am and is usually typical Nepali food, dal bhat (rice, lentils, and vegetables). Tea is served again at around 3 pm with local snacks. Dinner is at around 7 to 8 pm. The food is very simple but also extremely tasty, organic and filling. Vegetables mostly comes from our own gardens. Fresh, locally sourced milk and curd are also provided with meals upon request. The food is healthy and fresh.

During down time, volunteers have access to some of the most stunning and beautiful views of the mighty Himalayan Range, especially the major peaks such as Machhapuchre, Annapurna II, Annapurna III. Himchuli, Lamjung Himal, Ganesh Himal, and Manaslu. All peaks are above 7,000m high.
The area around is a famous trekking trail called Royal Trek and features excellent views of lakes, waterfalls, jungles, rivers, pine forests, and snowy Himalayan peaks. Wildlife such as monkeys, deer, birds of all varieties, leopards, and wild pigs can be spotted. It is one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on the planet.
Furthermore, after your volunteer time on our property is finished, guests are in an excellent location to begin high-altitude treks in the Annapurna Conservation Area or Manaslu Conservation Area where Sherpa and Tibetan cultures can be witnessed. Canyoning and river expeditions are also possible to organize.

Volunteers can also enjoy peaceful yoga and meditation on our property located on the top of the hill (Thulakot) while enjoying incredible 360 degree views of Nepal. Here, you can admire the "layers" of Nepal which are like nothing else on Earth.

On hot days, volunteers can easily walk or take local bus to Begnas Lake for swimming, fishing, or relaxing. The water is clean and the lake is well-tended.

Easy access to Pokhara city to get supplies, entertainment, shopping, etc.
