  About us
  
  We are a large family living near Koblenz, not far from the Rhine and the Moselle, and we are looking for Workawayers whom we can warmly welcome into our family and everyday life.
  
  Mom and Dad are both teachers, and we have seven children ranging in age from 23 years to 18 months. Our two oldest children are studying in Cologne, so at home we currently have three boys aged 12, 9 and 18 months, and two girls aged 17 and 6. Our sweet family dog Mira, who is three years old, is also part of the family.
  
  Our eldest daughter still living at home is in senior high school and is very interested in everything creative. She loves drawing and writing stories. Our 12-year-old son is in junior high and enjoys creating online environments in Minecraft and similar games. Our 9-year-old son is still in elementary school, while our 6-year-old daughter has just finished forest kindergarten and will start elementary school in August. Both of them are big fans of Mario Kart and Pokémon. Our youngest son is just beginning to speak and is busy exploring everything within his reach. As a family, we also enjoy playing board games or card games together when we find the time.
  
  We are open-minded and interested in new people, other cultures and everyday life in different countries. During her university holidays, Mom worked as an au-pair for several families across Europe, usually for short stays of two to three months, and she really enjoyed being part of different family lives for a while. This experience is one reason why we like the idea of welcoming people into our own home too — not as anonymous helpers, but as temporary members of our household and family rhythm.
  
  One passion connects our whole family in different ways: LEGO. In 2019, we opened a small side business. Over the years, this has grown into a separate LEGO shop with its own team. The day-to-day operation of the shop is covered by that team. Workawayers are not involved in the operation and helping in the shop is not part of a Workaway stay with us.
  
  Around this LEGO world, another separate project has also developed: a cosy LEGO building space. Like the shop, this is not part of the Workaway exchange. It has its own purpose and its own team, and Workawayers are not expected to help with its daily operation.
  
  Separately from this, we also have a large non-commercial LEGO hobby and exhibition area, which is still growing and changing. This is something our family enjoys very much. It is full of unfinished ideas, landscapes, scenes and LEGO worlds, and it is part of the creative atmosphere of our home and family life.
  
  If you like LEGO, creative hobbies, storytelling, drawing, small decorative details, board games, fantasy worlds, city layouts, trains or simply spending time with a lively family, you may enjoy this part of our everyday life too. It is more like joining a family that has a very unusual and very visible hobby.

  We would also like you to enjoy and explore our beautiful region. We live near Koblenz, close to the Rhine and the Moselle, in an area with a lot of history, nature and cultural attractions.
  
  If you are interested in culture and history, there is a lot to discover here: medieval castles, old towns, the Rhine valley, ancient Roman border fortifications and many other places connected to the long history of the region. Dozens of castles are located nearby, many of them along the Rhine, which is only a short distance from our home.
  
  Koblenz, with around 100,000 inhabitants, offers cafés, restaurants, bars, shopping, museums and some nightlife. Cologne and Frankfurt are also easy to reach by train, depending on the connection, and both offer many more possibilities for culture, concerts, museums, nightlife and city life. Our two oldest children study in Cologne, so visiting Cologne can also be a nice option.
  
  If you love nature and hiking, there are many trails in the area that you can explore on foot, by bike or even by canoe. Forests start very close to our home, and the Rhine and Moselle landscapes offer many beautiful places for walks, hikes and day trips.
  
  When time and family life allow it, our older children may be happy to show you parts of the area if you are interested. But it is also completely fine if you prefer to explore independently. Especially during busy family phases, we cannot promise a full sightseeing programme, but we are happy to help you understand what is possible and what might be worth visiting.
  
  And if you are interested in video games, board games or card games, you will probably find welcome companions in our family. Dad teaches economics, politics and ethics, so there is also usually room for interesting conversations and discussions if you enjoy that.
  
  For us, Workaway is mainly about cultural exchange: sharing everyday life, meals, language, conversations, family routines and small moments that help people understand another country from the inside.

  Aide

  We are looking for Workawayers who would enjoy being part of a large and lively family for a while.
  
  The help we are looking for is normal light help around family life and the household, for example:
  
  • helping with simple family meals or cooking something together
  • light help around the house
  • light gardening
  • spending time with us and the children in everyday situations
  • joining family activities such as board games, card games, walks or creative hobbies
  • helping to keep family life running in small practical ways
  • house and pet sitting in suitable situations
  
  We are not looking for a classic au-pair. We are not looking for someone whose main role is childcare, and we are not looking for professional help for our business activities.
  
  Of course, in a large family everyone helps a little here and there, and being friendly and comfortable around children is important. But the main idea is that you become part of our family life for a while, not that you take over a fixed childcare role.
  
  If you enjoy LEGO, drawing, storytelling, decorating small scenes, board games, fantasy worlds or creative family hobbies, there may also be many opportunities to spend enjoyable time with us and the children. You do not need any special experience for this. A friendly, open and curious person who enjoys family life, cultural exchange and shared everyday moments can fit very well with us.
  
  Language and communication
  
  Good communication is very important for us, especially because we are a large family with children of different ages.
  
  For that reason, we need Workawayers to have at least a solid level of English or German. As a rough guideline, B2 or better in either English or German is important. Better English or German skills are of course very welcome, and speaking some German can make everyday life with the children much easier.
  
  You do not need to speak perfectly. We are patient, and we enjoy language exchange. But we need to be able to communicate clearly and safely without major misunderstandings — with us and with the children.
  
  Family life and everyday rhythm
  
  We are a family, not a hotel or a company. Our children are part of our everyday life, and the house is often lively.
  
  There will be shared meals, children around, conversations, noise, laughter, sometimes stress, sometimes chaos and hopefully many good moments. We would like Workawayers to feel welcome in this atmosphere and to become part of our family rhythm for a while.
  
  Life here is not only about LEGO, even though LEGO is very present in our family. There may also be moments for playing a board game with the children, joining a family movie evening, sitting together for a meal, cooking something, going for a walk, talking about life in different countries or simply sharing everyday family life.
  
  At the same time, we also want Workawayers to have enough personal free time to relax, explore the area independently or just have quiet time for themselves.
  
  Important note for July and August 2026
  
  The last weeks before summer were very intense for our family, and now the school holidays have started here in Rhineland-Palatinate. Our children need more time and attention from us again, and we also want to enjoy some family time during the holidays.
  
  We are happy to welcome Workawayers during this time if they are independent, flexible and comfortable in a lively household. However, July and August are not the right moment for someone who expects a full sightseeing programme or a very structured host-family schedule every day.
  
  We are happy to explain what you can visit, and the area is beautiful, but we will not always be able to accompany you. People who can organise some of their free time independently usually feel most comfortable here.
  
  From September onward, when the most intense summer phase is over, we will probably be more open again to a stronger focus on family connection, cultural exchange and shared activities.
  
  
  Length of stay
  
  For our family, very short stays are usually not ideal. Our minimum is normally about three weeks.
  
  Four weeks or longer is often better, because it gives everyone time to settle in, understand the household, get to know the children and actually become part of everyday life for a while.
  
  If someone really connects with our family and enjoys being part of it, we are also very open to staying in contact afterwards — and maybe welcoming them again another time.

  Hébergement

  We have two guest rooms in our house. Each room can accommodate up to two Workawayers, but only if those two people are travelling together.
  
  One guest room has two separate beds, so it is suitable for two friends, siblings or two people travelling together who do not want to share a bed.
  
  The other guest room has one double bed. This room is suitable for a couple, or for two friends travelling together who explicitly feel comfortable sharing a wide bed.
  
  There is a bathroom near each of the guest rooms.
  
  Our home is built into a hillside and has several levels. It is a real family home, not a hotel, so please expect normal family life, children, shared spaces and some everyday chaos.

  Food
  
  We usually eat together as a family when possible. Our food is normal family food, not a special diet. We are a large household, so very complicated dietary requirements can be difficult for us.
  
  Vegetarian food is usually possible if you are flexible and do not expect a separate kitchen routine every day. Vegan or very strict diets may be difficult for us, especially during busy family phases.
  
  We appreciate people who sometimes enjoy cooking or preparing simple meals. We also love the idea of cultural exchange through food. If you like to cook something from your home country or introduce us to a dish from your culture, we would be very happy to try it. And we will also try to share some local or regional food with you from time to time — for example Doeppekuchen, a traditional potato dish from our area.
  
  
  Our dog
  
  We have a family dog, Mira. She is part of our everyday life. Please only contact us if you are comfortable around dogs.
  
  If you and Mira get along well, it is also completely fine if you sometimes take her for a walk — either just a short round nearby or a longer walk through the area. The forest starts directly behind our house, so there are good opportunities for walks.
  
  Because we already have our own dog and do not want to take any risk that animals might not get along with each other, we unfortunately cannot host Workawayers who travel with their own pets.
